with a coastline bigger than that of the US; friendly
locals; cheapest beer, cigs and movies in the world, the
best bargains off the beaten track; you can roll on the
beach, go diving with a whole herd of whale sharks, climb a
volcano, do anything that doesn't involve snow. Can't
really describe it all in one paragraph; if you need to
know more, keep posting or drop me a line.
on palawan, the best way to get around is by boat, the
roads are awful. and there are no airplains going between
cabu and PPC.
1. Don't drink the tap water
2. If male and a group of kids ask what's your name, just
say Joe even if it's not really Joe. Help reinforce their
self-esteem.
3. Don't play cards for money.
4. You're still entered even if you don't buy the magazine
subscriptions!

to go to a library to borrow "idiot's guide to USA".

god almighty, where do these people come from. look on the
map three hours by plane left of guam and it's there. if you
overshoot you will end up in vietnam - but that's a whole
new "pass me a few tips".

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH. OK better now!!!!!
The guy is asking for some information on a country whose
movie stars, music, culture is not rammed down the throat of
every television, radio and cinema-goer in the world today.
The Philippines is an insignificant country with a large
terrain and a very small voice in today's world. This guy
comes to a forum which encourages people to ask questions
about new lands and to gain more information. Your glib
repsonse is neither witty or amusing. If you cant say
anthing worthwhile dont say anything at all!
Lillian - try making your way to Camiguin Island off Cagayan
de Oro in Mindanao. Very peaceful. If you can make your way
there by travelling through the Vesayas region you'll
appreciate it all the more. This can be done by jeepney,
ferry and bus. Failing that head to Palawan island from
Manila and spend a month exploring this huge very desolate
island. Watch your pockets and cash though!
Im Filipina myself and I tell you, dont be afraid of thiefs
or pickpockets...be wary of people who overcharge you just
because of the color of your skin. Dont get me
wrong...Filipinos are a wonderful people, but you know the
saying about the few rotten apples... these poor guys tend
to assume that since youre a foreigner you must be
rich...very sad for someone travelling on a shoestring
budget...but then, theyre just trying to earn enough to feed
their family of 8 for that day. It's best to have a
Filipino friend along with you to haggle and make sure you
get the right prices.
Oh yes that's another important thing: unless youre in a
department store, mall, or hotel, haggle everything! In
Baguio, a great place to get 93% silver jewelry, dont be
afraid to ask for half their asking price.
For example, I got a great armband that was priced at around
$25 down to $9!
Nothing wrong with the water...in fact Manila has the only
potable water in all of Asia, but in all honesty I still
order those 5 gallon jugs of mineral water.
Kurt please dont give tips like "tell them your name is Joe"
that only reinforces the stereotype that they fit all
foreigners into. we're trying to break walls here not build
them.
Any questions Lillian, just keep posting or mail me...Id be
glad to answer!
try going to the philippine tourism website:

from RP. El Nido is just breath-taking in its dramatic beauty but difficult to get around as there seems to be a bit of rain hanging around there. Really loved Romblon, easy to get to from Batangas, laid-back, friendly, you can have a gorgeous coconut-palm lined beach with crystal clear waters all to yourself. Great snorkeling nearby. Very quiet, off the beaten places to stay and everyone really friendly. A chance to see Filipino town life with almost no tourism influences.
