In the process of planning a hoiday for mid-July -
Does anyone know what Langkawi is like as a destination....
I'm currently thinking of spending 5 nights there and just
wanted to see if anyone had any insight into what Langkawi
is like ... is there much to do .... is it as cheap as the
term 'duty-free island suggests' and what might the weather
be like?

Langkawi is not really a back packers island any more. Much
of the cheaper accommodation has been replaced by more
upmarket stuff. The main attraction are the beaches, and for
Malaysians - shopping. Yes it is duty free, so beer is the
cheapest in the country, and all items are tax free (but
electronics, cameras etc should be tax free everywhere in
    M'isa).
The weather in July will be rainy as they have their monsoon
then. Its worth a visit, but depends on your budget and
where the rest of your holiday will be based.
