It will be my mum's 60th birthday later this year in
October. I would like to suprise her with a trip to Bali or
Bangkok. I can only get a 7-9 days off work so it will only
be a quick trip. She'll give anything a go and she's fun
but i'm not sure which place she would prefer. I've been to
both and each place has it's plusses. What do you think?

  1. Depends on what she likes Added by: Bill M (bmanly@hotmail.com)

Hi, if your Mum likes a bit of stirring fun and bargaining
then I would think Bali woul be best. If she likes the
quieter life with some action but plenty of nice beaches
then Koh Samui in Thailand is better. If she wants just
shopping and better accommodation then maybe phuket in
Thailand is better. It sounds like your Mum likes a bit of
fun and would go anywhere and do most things so I think Bali
    would be better for her.
    Just my thoughts, Bill.

  2. Thought about Lombok? Added by: Maddi

I agree with Bill - especially if you've only got about a
week, Bali is probably better than Thailand. I would
recommend staying somewhere other than Kuta the whole time -
the mountains around Ubud are beautiful and you can easily
go up and back in a couple of days.
Have you thought about Lombok though? I haven't been, but
I've heard it's sensational and is less touristy than Bali.
That may be a good option?
    Maddi

  4. My mum Added by: Singha

    Hi Michelle!
I've been three times in Asia with my mum, who's today 53
years old. Her favourite spots were:
    *Candidasa at Bali
*Koh PhaNgan (out of time for the fullmoon parties) staying
at "PhaNgan Bayshore Resort" at the beach Haad Rin east.
Nice bungs and surrondings. Tel 66-1-9564367 Fax 66-1-
    9791312.
*Koh Tao when we stayed at the beach Had Sairee at the very
nice "Sunsetburi Resort". Tel 077-377171. Bungs are a bit
pricier then normal, approx 800 bath/night. Nice to do a
day tour out to the beautiful island Koh Nangyan for some
    snorkling.
Hope you and your mum will enjoy your trip!!!!

  5. Chiang Mai Added by: Karlo
[Timestamp: Wed 19 May, 13:35 Tasmanian Standard Time]

If you go to Bali, don't mess with Kuta, and don't go to
Lombok, either. Start in sadly touristy but comfy Ubud, and
charter car and diver for trips to the north and east.

If you aren't interested in the beach, but want to see
Thailand, go directly to Chiang Mai, and cruise from there.

We recently took my 80 year old mother-in-law to Bali & she
loved it. The shopping was excellent. Bangkok was also
good, but she liked the quiet & nature of Bali. Avoiding
Kuta is good advice no matter what your age. bob

  7. ubud Added by: Anna (trahaira@lion.cs.latrobe.edu.au)

I've travelled to bali quite a few times and I still really
like Ubud. The shopping is good, the restaurants are
excellent, the scenery is fabulous, the sights are nearby,
there's local culture and pleasant cheap hotels (although
for that sort of time frame, a package deal is good value).
