Hi There:
Heard many different stories about it. Can anybody give a
hint about changing money in Flores. Are the rates that bad
or are the rates similar to Bali? Any dutch have you any
experience with the girocheque.
Thx in advance, Robert

When I was in Flores in Jan of'98 the rates were lower in
Flores, much lower! I think you could geet 5000-6000
rp/dollar in Bali while in Flores the rate was normally
3000/dollar, after som bargaining 3400-3600 (could probably
be better if your bahasa indonesia is better than mine).
Lotta is right, expect exchange rates to be 30 to 40% lower
then in Bali. Also none of the hotels or travelagents
accept credit cards, not even Merpati. Your only options
are 1) come with enough cash 2) get a cash advance with
your credit card (I did get one in Maumere, I'm not sure
about Labuan Bajo).

I just came back from Bali and the islands east. The
exchange rate on both Simbawa and Flores was significantly
lower than on Bali and Lombok. On Bali up to 8700, and on
Flores and Simbawa 8,000 or less, to the U.S. Dollar,
assuming you could find a place to change $$$$. In general
expect the rupiah to be up on the upswing against the major
currencies.
As everywhere in Indonesia the girocheque is a good way of
getting money. Even small cities have postoffices where you
can get the money. I was in Flores 3 years ago , travelled
from Labuhanbajo to Maumere. In the different cities in
between we got our money. Use the girocheque while you
still can, I heard the Postbank wants to stop with them.
Rates are bad but they are worse for currencies other than
US$. Six months ago US$ was 7500 in Bali and 6000 -6500 in
Flores. The Australian dollar was 4500 in Bali but only
2000 - 2500 in Flores
