Hi there
Heading to Bangkok around the beginning of Feb and working
my way down to the islands. Approximately 3 weeks to do
it. What should I miss and what can I not possibly
miss??? Looking for beautiful beaches both busy and quiet,
but clean.
Any tips much appreciated

    debbie (i guess),
where ever you go in southern thailand you cant go wrong.
i have been all over thailand and i'll be there again this
sept. ko samui has changed over the years but the island
itself is still beautiful. if you wish to learn to dive
then catch a speed boat up to ko tao. it is still cheap
and primitave (mostly that is). i have never been to ko
phangen though so i will check that out myself. on the
other side phuket is more expensive and luxurious but
great diving and beautiful. then there is krabi and the
phi phi islands. i could go on and on but i'll leave the
rest up to you. if you want to chat give me a e-mail.

  2. enjoy Khao Sok, beware Surat Thani Added by: robin

I wish I was in your shoes! If I was you I'd make a stop at Koh Samui. Whilst it's not what you'd call untouched there is a laid-back charm about the island. I recommend the Reggae Club in Chaweng for a good time. In between K.S. and Phuket is Khao Sok National Park, set in stunning scenery of lush jungle and dramatic limestone mountains. I stayed in a tree-house resort (forgot the name) right in the middle of the jungle and next to a river. It is definitely worth a few days in this tranquil spot - hardly anyone seems to go there. As for Phuket, don't bother. It's not all that bad but it's not all that good either. Its nightlife is pretty crap (and quite pricey) and there are LOADS of tourists but the beaches are reasonably good. Finally, a word of warning: although fear and violence is quite rare in Thailand I found myself in an uncomfortable position in the port of Surat Thani. The ferry arrived from K.S. at about 3a.m.and I was expecting to be met by an official from the company with whom I was catching a bus.Instead I was met by a couple of drunken touts who claimed they worked for the company and who then took me and a couple of other passengers for a drive to some dingy backstreets and demanded money for their services. I made my way back to the port only to be confronted by more of the same looking for a quick buck. They got pretty shirty when I refused to go with them. It's nothing serious to worry about - just wait for someone who looks to be a genuine tour operator, sus them out before following and don't be naive like I was. My experience of Surat Thani was that it was a den of thieves but otherwise the South is great. Whatever you do, have a good time.
