Thai Island Accomodation for 31/12/99

I am travelling to Thailand in December 1999, and plan to be on a Thai Beach for New Years Eve.
Is there anyone else doing the same thing - if so, I would like to get in contact with you.
Also, I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether there are any Millenium/New Year's Eve parties and what I can expect to pay for accommodation.
Cheers. Gav

  1. Overcrowded Thai beaches Added by: Rich (rich@loxinfo.co.th)
[Timestamp: Wed 26 May, 13:12 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Dear Gavin,
I live in Thailand, and usually go away from here in
December and January, as the beaches are over-crowded,
over-priced, and over-littered, unless you pick
out-of-the-way places, such as the islands off of Pakbara,
in Trang, or others near the Malaysian border on the west
    coast (Satun Province).
One major consideration is the possibility that banks,
telephone and other services may be out of service for a
couple of weeks in January due to both greed and the lack of
preparation here for Y2K. I anticipate banks
"offering" to cash travellers checks at perhaps a
25% discount, saying their computers are down.
Wherever you go, try to stay in places which generate their
own electricity, and are self-sufficient. And be sure to
have enough local funds to last from 31 December to 1
    February, just in case.
I plan to go to Manado, Gorontalo, and Palu, all in
Sulawesi, Indonesia, during that period. However, it is the
rainy season there at that time.
Tour operators in Thailand try to steer you to overpriced
Phuket and Koh Samui islands. Even the famous Koh Pangan
Island, north of Samui, is getting over-developed.
Last night I visited the Khao San Road area, where
backpackers used to stay. It was overpriced and
    over-developed for budget travellers.
However, due to the fasting month of Ramadan occurring
during the New Year's period, Malaysia and Indonesia may not
be in a partying mood. So, Thailand could be OK if you get
here early enough to find the best beaches south of Krabi in
Trang and Satun provinces. It still may be crowded there
    too.
    Kind regards,
    Rich Fuller
