I'm planning to go to timor (kupang) and from there I want
to travel to sumatra, by boat, or any way possible. I want
to stick to the 'beaten track' nad my question is: is it
save to go, having the upcoming elections in mind, should I
wait for what the effects of the results of the elections
are? And what budget would I need, since I will be doing
this in a 2 month time period. Any people been there and
around recently and what places to avoid? Any
information, do's and don'ts and tips more than welcome!
Thanks,
vince

no mate, it is not as safe as the 9 to 5. If you want off
the beaten track, see timor, few visit the northeast of the
island. crisis is a period of potential oportunity/
misfortune. the police and army will always look after you
as long as your not doing something wrong. I'm hoping to be
in dilli for the refendum, god willing the celebrations and
nopt the blood will flow. Megawati is the most likely
contender for presidant, in my opinion she is the lesser of
her competion. The wonderful thing about Indonesian
politics is the indeterminability of outcomes, perhaps you
could wait, but haven't you waited too long now?

Once we spent 4 weeks traveling from Kupang to Maumere and
I found that definitely to short. Sure you can make it over
the whole distance but you will stay most of your 2 month
on a bus, ferries.... and miss the real attractions.
Lamalera alone is an unforgetable experience and that takes
time too, because the transportation system on Lembata is
limited! It`s also worth to spend a copple of days (or
    more!) on Timor itself.
    Happy travels!
