I hate Penang. The area called the Beach Strip has been
turned into a crappy row of resort hotels like Waikiki in
Hawaii. No character whatsoever. The only interesting
thing to see in Penang is the Butterfly Farm.

the first time i went to penang i was in love and thought
it was fabulous in the mid-eighties. i was there for a
weekend a couple of years ago and i thought it was crap.
    these are the reasons.
    1) the traffic is almost as bad as bangkok - 1.5 hours from
the airport to farrenghi beach. and a pain everytime you go
    anywhere near georgetown
    2) the service was atrocious, slow and with a bad grace
wherever i went and that included a 5 star hotel (on
expenses, settle down in the cheap seats). it might be
better with the recession it certainly was first time
around. but you bet your holiday on it.
    3) the ribbon development has gone on apace and the place
    looks run down.
    4) the beaches aren't really very special and are "full" of
locals playing football and the like. now, it's their beach
they can do what they want, and when they do i will decide
what i want to do. which os stay away.
now i fully expect a barrage of protest but that's how i
saw it. me i'd go to phuket or langkawi for starters and
there are plenty of other places better than those around.
