Bali Info/Accommodation

My wife and I have been to Bali before and are thinking
about going back again for a full Month in August. We are
going to take a package deal for around $1,000 each for a 10
day trip and then intend to find our own accommodation
somewhere in Kuta or Legian for the rest of the stay. Does
someone know of a place that is clean and airconditioned
that is around $30 AUD a night that might be good to stay
at?
My second concern is that my wife is of Chinese appearance,
is there any ill feeling towards Chinese or are they just
treated the same as anyone else? It wasn't a problem for us
back in 1994.
Thirdly (due to the economic crises) are the street hawkers
and shop keepers more determined to make a sale? Taxi
driver's any worse? Or is it pretty much the same as before?
Are the bars right on the beach opened up again or are they
gone for good? Sorry about all the questions, we are just
trying to decide where to go, any help would be appreciated
from a recent visitor there.
Cheers, Bill.

  1. Accomodation Added by: Attle
[Timestamp: Sun 16 May, 12:21 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Hello Bill.
Use the hotel/accomodations that is listed in lonely
    planet`s guide for Bali/lombok.
I was on Bali in Sep/Okt 98, used LP guide and found a
good/cheap/and very friendly hotel on Kuta. Just besides
    Poppies lanes.
The Hawkers is as they used to be, but they still use to
take a NO for a No. More persistent is the people that
tries to get you to take a trip to their hotel/etc after
you won their grand price lottery! And they are not native
people, mostly europeans/aussies. Mostly located around Mac
    Donalds in Jalan Legian St.
There was a very big amount of people from Java and other
Islands that had come to Bali as fortune seekers, And they
created more trouble than the Balinese.
There was a big political congress at Sanur when I stayed
at Bali. 50000 people turned up, but it went peacefull.
The gouverment election is due to be held around June this
Year.Around that time I would have had some second toughts
going to Bali.Even If Bali is very important for Indonesias
economical income. There could be trouble there as vell(and
there has been reports of problems in the recent time).
If you will go by taxi use the meter!!. a trip that costs
by meter 4000Rp, they will charge you 20-40 000,without a
    second thougt.
The Bars at Kuta beach up towards Semniyak, were demolished
at 1 oct 98. Dont know if this is still true.
Sorry have no answer to the question about your wife, maybe
    someone else can help you.
    Best Regards Attle

If you ask me you're a way overpaying you package (1000 USD
mentioned). Thin again. It is possible to come from Europe
which is much more expensive for less money in high
    season...

  4. It Was Australian Dollars Added by: Bill M (bmanly@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Sun 23 May, 14:44 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Vesna it was $1,000 Australian dollars which is about $640
US. That is pretty good considering 10 nights accommodation
    is thrown in.
    Thanks, Bill
