Hi. I'm wondering if it is possible to go by boat from
Singapore to Medan. How long does it take and how much does
it cost.

But you can by catching the twice monthly Pelni ship from
Batam Island (Tanjung Pinang). It takes about 36 hours.
Since this is the same route as the ship from Bali/Jakarta
see the post 11 below this one for more info. Esp. Koen's
web-site. It is probably easier to cross over from Singapore
to Kota Bahru and bus up to Penang and then ferry across to
    Belawan harbor (Medan).
    .
Belawan is sea linked by two hydroplane ferries to Penang,
(4.5 hours). The Selasa Express (Kuala Perlis-Langkawi
Ferry Service #04-625630) runs Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday from Penang at 9am and returns at 1pm the following
day (W, Fr, Su). Belawan to Penang is Rp 76,000/96,000.
Expres Bahagia leaves Penang (Jl. Pasara King Edward
#04-631943) Monday and Thursday at noon, and Wednesday (9am)
and Saturdays at 10am, returning from Medan Tues/Fri/Sun at
11am. Both ferries have now standardized their fares at RM90
economy/RM110 1st class with free bus transfer into Medan.
From Medan both ferries use a single ticketing agent: Trophy
Tours (33D Jl. Brigjen. Katamso , near the Merpati office
and the Maimoon Palace #061-514888). The ferries run a free
bus ride to Medan from Belawan that drops passengers off at
the Deli Plaza/TVRI complex just north of the town square.
    .
Additionally, there are daily air connections between
Medan and Penang, and other destinations in Sumatra (Riau).
Air flights are more expensive from Singapore,
since it is an "international" rather than a
"domestic" flight. Connections to Bali (via Java) are also
    available from Garuda (@Rp 1.630.000)

It may well be possible, and if 36 hours on an Indonesian
ferry is your idea of fun, then go for it...
However, that stretch of water can be very rough - I'd
recommend the shorter (4 hours or so) Penang to Medan
crossing. You can get a coach easily from Singapore up the
coast to Penang. Much less danger of drowning too.
    Enjoy!
    Dom
