We read in one of the LP guides it was possible to do a two
or three day tour to Mt Bromo leaving from Lovina. We don't
want to do the Tourist package but understand you can do
much the same tour independently by using the Perama bus at
a fraction of what a Tourist package would cost. Can anyone
tell me more about How to get there, Where to stay, How to
get up the mountain, is a guide really necessary and what
SCAMS are we likely to encounter if we did this
independently?

  1. Do it Added by: Manfred (rannandah@hotmail.com)

It will take you a good day to get from Lovina to Mt Bromo
we did it a couple of years ago with 2 kids in tow!
Firstly charter a ride across to Gilimuanuk to catch the
ferry to Ketapang from there its only a matter of buying a
ticket to Bromo can't quite remember the prices but it
wasn't expensive and lunch was included in the price. Make
sure the ticket includes the transport up to Bromo
Once at Bromo make sure you get right up to the top as
Accomidation can be readily found up there, some buses stop
in the village just below (about 5 km's from Bromo)
You do not require guides there, it can all be done by your
    selves quite easily.
It takes a good days travel there so with 3 days it only
allows you 1 day there Should spend min 2 days! then instead
of heading back to Bali go to Yogya MUCH BETTER!!!
drop me a line if you want any further info!
    Have a good trip!

  2. To Bromo Added by: Corey

It's possible to go to Bromo as you discribed but you will
have to do it on your own. Take a bus to Gilimanuk then the
ferry over to Java. You can catch a bus from here to Bromo.
Perama concentrates on Bali and Lombok and any other
destinations they just resell tickets for other companies.
One thing to remember, especially in Probolinggo (a town
most people hate) you can purchase your bus tickets on the
bus and not at the agents (saves alot of money). Buses have
    destination signs.
Most people go to Bromo for one day. You arrive in the
evening stay overnight in a town like Ngadisari and easily
arrange transport to Bromo in the early am from there. If
you stay in Cemoro Lawang you can just walk to Bromo but you
may want to take a ride to the look out. Most people spend a
few hours and then go on to the next destination.
It can be cold up there in the morning but all I had was a
t-shirt and long pants. Not much discomfort for me, but I'm
use to cold weather. Some people rented jackets and other
cold weather gear in Cemoro Lawang.

    Hi Karen
We did exactly this 3 days ago. Yogyarental bus from Lovina
to Ngadisari was 45,000 rpand will probably get you in
about 8-9 in the evening. We stayed in Bromo homestay which
was no frills but fine at 10,000 rp. HOWEVER 100mtrs up the
hill is the Yoshi hotel which at the very least you should
to eat at as it is one of the most charecterful places I
have come across- try the hot wine . Agree with evertything
    else posted . have fun
    Andy
