Hi. I stayed on Koh Tao in September 1997. The Gulf of
Thailand seems indeed to be the better choice in this
season. I had clear skies and clear waters, no big currents
at all.
Koh Tao is quite small. There's only one main road (dirt
track really) which runs along the western shore, just
behind the tree line. All accomodation on the island is
located on this side. At that time there were about 6 or 7
dive shops, most of them hooked up to the PADI system.
Probably the biggest of them was Samui International Diving
School with braches all over Thailand. You can find this
shop in the center of the village Mae Haad(near the jetty
if I remember correctly). It's a 5 Star IDC center, without
a doubt the most reputed of the lot.
Having said this, I stayed at Ban's Diving Resort however.
This shop is located at the absolute far end of the dirt
track (10 min. walk). Also 5 Star PADI, and beautifully set
right on the beach, with bungalows 50 yards landinwards.
Advantages : nice beach, good atmosphere, good food
throughout the day, cheap as well : $20 a dive - all(!!!)
in, $3 a night for a double bed and shower. All dives from
spacious boat; 2 morning dives and 2 in the afternoon; also
night dives. Very experienced staff.
Ban's has it all : good diving, rooms, restaurant and beach.
How about bringing a 10mnds old kid to the island, I suppose you can get A/C accom there.
And what about malaria?
And how rough is the boattrip from Ko Samui???
Thanks,
Bjorn
Been there on 97.
The boat ride on the fast ferry made me seasick.
The slow ferry was ok but really long.
I've seen a few faranfs with young children, but never so
young.
Ko Tao is not especialy malarious, but one has to take all
precausions-pills ,repelant etc.
I know of two locations on the west side that offer a/c
bungalows.
It worth the effort of getting there only for a long enough
stay-a week or so,or longer.
I have just come from there - is you are goingto dive then
the dive schools can offer you cheap accomodation which are
actually the nicest bungalows around.
I can highly recommend SCUBA JUNCTION I learnt with them
and they are very competent and also fun.
Depending what you are into the best places to stay are;
SIMPLY LIFE BUNGALOWS
AC BUNGALOWS
BONG BUNGALOWS
Enjoy - it was definitely my fav island!!
Hi Vic
Been at koh tao in July 1998. Very nice island, very good
for diving, snorkelling and doing vacation stuff!
I stayed and dived at buddha view dive resort. Very nice
stuf, most people are from europe, the food is very good
too. When you take a course you get a discount on the room.
Open water course costs 7800 Baht, advanced course 6600.
Diving is really great, especially chumpon pinnacle. For
more information check their site: www.buddhaview.com
Have a nice trip!
Help. What is the fastest way to Ko Tao? We arrive in
Bangkok at 1pm and want to know if it is possible to get to
Ko Tao the same day. I have heard of several possibilities
about flying to Ko Samui.. Anyone who has done it recently
please send me an email. thanks :)
