  1. Niah Info Added by: Peter

I only visited the one cave site in Borneo - Niah. Although
I can't compare it to other caves on Borneo I can compare
with a lot of other caves I've seen in other countries.
For sheer size it's very impressive. It isn't very exciting
for it's formations (there are very few stalactites and
stalagmites) and it doesn't have a river through it but it
does allow you to do your own thing. There is an excellent
hostel run by the National Parks Department. Very nice
lodges for hardly any money. Once you're there you can go
to the caves as often as you want. You walk along a
boardwalk through the rainforest and explore the caves
under your own steam. No guides, shows etc. The story about
the archeological finds there are impressive as are the
poles left by the bird nest collectors. They live in the
caves to protect their prized nests and it is a bit freaky
to see clothing hanging out to dry out the front of the
    caves.
If you are heading to Thailand as part of your trip, there
are some great wild caves up in the north. Very active and
beautiful and you explore them the crawl and slosh way.
These are deserted except for your party and are really
good. If you're interested look up a place called Cave
Lodge. One of the best places I have ever visited.
Otherwise enjoy Borneo it's also a great place.

  2. Mulu Added by: Liz (lizprice@hotmail.com)

Mulu National Park in Sarawak is THE place to go for caves
in Borneo. Niah is only one cave, Mulu has dozens, some of
them are world record holders in terms of size. You can fly
to Mulu from Miri. Choice of accommodation outside the
park.To go to the caves you need a guide, best if you can
team up with other people. I am a caver living in M'sia,
mail me for any more info.
