My group lands in Mumbai next week, and we were wanting to
donate some things to a local charity. We had planned on
taking empty bags to India with us, to hold curios and
souvenirs which we would inevitably purchase along the
way. Then we decided "why not fill these bags with
clothes, shoes, books, toys, etc. from home and arrange for
someone from a charity in Mumbai to meet us and pick these
up upon our arrival?"
The problem is, we are having trouble contacting an agency
or organization to take our stuff. Can anyone help us?
Remember, this should be a lot of stuff - there are 15 of
us!
Thanks for helping us to help others!

Angie,
The desire to help is admirable but how to help is not
always clear. It is unlikely that any clothes or household
items you might bring would fit into the cultural/climactic
needs of the people you want to help.
Like maybe they don't need cloths but they do need a pump.
Please consider an aid agency that isn't too much of a con
and let them handle the what and how.
I like SEWA but then each to her own.
Bombay works on different rules to the rest of the world.
If you want to make sure it gets to the right people (All
20 million of them), then you're better off getting your
cab to take you directly to the slum, Dharavi, which is
right by the Airport, unloading the bags, and driving off.
(You think I'm kidding). Ever seen hyenas go for unattended
food?
simple. Stop off at the nearest slum and give your stuff.
Or you can surf the net and locate quite a few charitable
orgs.
