We are traveling to Dharamsala from Delhi. We plan to fly
into Jammu and a driver will take us the rest of the way by
road. How safe is Jammu these days? Has anyone been in the
area lately?

I got to Ladakh last year, but not J&K. From what I heard
though, your wallet is probably in more danger than your
person. I heard some hair-raising stories about the road
from Srinigar to Leh, but others said it wasn't too bad.
Everyone said that you would have to get through Kargil,
where bombing from Pakistani forces was a nightly
occurrence.
No, it can't be called safe. The road is dangerous.
Robberies are frequent, and Pak shelling, Indian Army
charges and localized terrorist appearances can be pretty
scary. A lot depends on the savvy of your driver. Be SURE
you drive with him for a few hours BEFORE you hire him.
Don't mean to scare you off the trip. You are not likely to
be wounded or kidnapped. But slowed down, yes, security
checked, yes, jostled and jangled, for sure, and maybe
robbed.
Why don't you take a direct flight from New Delhi to Dharmshala as there is a domestic airport near Dharamshala don't quote me Nagarkot or something like this ..ABout 30mins cab to Dharamshala..as it seems silly to go to Jammu and then drive to D'shala if you don't have nay thing specific to do in Jammu...
The airport is closed. The only way in is fly Delhi to
Jammu and drive 4hrs to Dharamsala. I've talked to the
person helping me set this up and he says its safe and
spectacular drive. Sure hope so.....
I took this route when I went to Dharamsala in March.
I experienced no problems at all. Potala Tours
and Travels made arrangements for the airline tickets
and the driver for me. The driver met me at the airport
in Jammu. I'm very tall and blonde and was travelling
alone and very obviously a Westerner. Everything went very
smoothly, and in fact, my driver was very protective of me
during the several short stops we had to make to
present travel permits (also taken care of by Potala). I
wouldn't mind taking this route again, but I would check
to see if there had been any problems in the Jammu area
in the month or two before I went.
Jammu is the closest airport to Dharamsala. The small
airport at Gaggal (15 km from Dharamsala) has been closed
since 1996.
Feel free to email me, if you want more information.
