Rafting in Nepal

Going treking in Nepal in Sep/Oct, thought some rafting would be a nice change. Was hoping to do 8-10 days of moderate+ grade - have done some rafting in North Qld and South Is NZ. Any suggestions? What river? What company? - heard the Sun Kosi is a good trip - what do you think?
Thanx all.

  1. Sun Kosi Added by: ah

I rafted the Sun Kosi last year and it was brilliant if a
little long. Some really good rapids but also lots of
relaxing flat spots and amazing scenery. Can't remember
the names of other good rivers but speak to people when you
get there - or talk to the tour operators (the good ones)
and they will give you a good idea of what each trip is
    like.
As for selecting a tour operator, well you get what you pay
for I think. The 8 day Sun Kosi tour cost us about $185US
and we were promised self bailing boats which didn't
happen. The boats we did get were pretty old and by the
end of eight days was well and truly sick of bailing.
Still had a great time and I'm sure you will too.

For a really superb trip, raft the Kali Gandaki. Also, if
you want a tour operator, check out Equator Expeditions
when you get to Thamel. They'll arrange a reasonably
    priced, fun trip for you.

I'm also off in Sept/Oct to do both the Sun Kosi (9 days)
and Marsyandi (5 days). I intend going with Ultimate
Descents with whom I had a very good experience last year:
good boats and gear, with excellent NZ and Nepalese
guides. Perhaps a little more expensive than some - you
pays your money and takes your choice. You can find them
    at http://www.w-o-w.com/clients/ultimate-
    descents/index.html.
In addition to the Sun Kosi, another 10 day trip worth
thinking about may be the Karnali.

  4. Skip Ultimate Descents but do raft in Nepal Added by: Mags (jennster@hotmail.com)

I did the Karnali (12 days including trek) in 98 with UD
and had a GREAT TRIP. Karnali is a wonderful high volume
river, I was there in the spring. Went back in Mar 99 for
the Marsyandgi and found out the UD in a huge struggle with
the local partner and all the trips are suffering badly.
Our service was awful and our trip ended up getting
subcontracted to Equator, who did a great job. They can be
highly recommended. One thing: the Marsyandgi is a low/mid
volume river, very rocky and I didn't enjoy it as much as
the Karnali. However, the Sun Kosi, another high volume
    river, would be great.
