India with kids

Am planning a trip with husband and 13 year old daughter
and 10 year old son in September/October. I noticed a few
posts below mentioning guesthouses in India. If we stay in
a guesthouse will we all be able to stay in the same room?
My kids are good travellers and at this stage I'm looking
to do Goa, Agra, New Delhi and if time permits over to
Nepal. Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

  1. Kids in India Added by: Yarra (yarra15@ozemail.com.au)

    Annette,
I've taken my two daughters now aged 8 and 12 over a couple
of times most recently during September last year. It had
its highs and lows but overall was pretty fantastic.
Many hotels/guest houses have family rooms and by and large
the locals think it strange if you don't want the kids with
you. We often got two rooms next to each other, which helped
with the romance angle, but also met the girls need for
    security.
With kids it really helps if you can find a place with a
garden/veranda/courtyard for them to play and let off steam.
By and large the kids hated the big towns with their noise,
pollution and high aggression levels from the locals.
Conversely they loved the little places, the wildlife parks
and the quite pace of village life that we passed along the
    trekking trails.
A pool kept them happy for hours and the Tourist Cottages at
the back of the Taj View Hotel in Agra was very popular.
Mind you, apart from the Taj itself, the kids absolutely
loathed Agra and its denizens. They have nothing good to say
about Jaipur either. Now Almora in the Kumaon was a
different matter and they still ask about when we are going
    back.
Goa might be a bit tough. The weather will be pretty bad at
that time of year and the sea choppy and unsuitable for
swimming. Seafood will be hard to come by as the boats won't
    leave harbour.
Drop me a line if I can help in any way and look for Ian
Locksley's very good website on this sort of issue
    Yarra
BTW if this branch fills up with obscene posts just ignore
it. They will go away eventually

Goa is more of a hippie party place - kids might not like it
so much, and Agra and ND are pretty awful places, from every
perspective except historical. Don't go to ND unless you
have a really good reason to do so, catch a flight, visit
friends. On the other hand, I bet kids would love Nepal,
even Kathmandu, becuase it is so funky in places. Why not
go to the very pretty east coast beaches in Orissa,
Varanasi, and then Nepal is easy to get to. Fly into
Calcutta. Much better itinerary for the kids (or anyone for
    that matter.)

As Yarra above says, I have a website about our 4 month
budget trip to Nepal, India and Thailand with our kids then
aged 9 and 11. This non-commercial site has details on how
we did things, what the kids enjoyed or didn't and lots of
other info, tips, advice, our itinerary, important health
info, lots of photos, details of all our hotels plus heaps
    more at
    http://www.southwest.com.au/~lockley
Questions and requests for further advice welcome.
    Ian
(I don't get a chance to get on much these days)
