is it possible to travel on the roof of a bus the full
length of the kkh?

    Yes, you can do this. I have traveled stretches of the KKH
    and, more often, wide areas of Pakistan's Northern Areas, on
    the roof of buses. It can be incredibly bumpy and
    uncomfortable, on either a metal or wood baggage rack. If
    you sit on your bag, you have to hold on so you stay upright.
    It can also be very cold. The other side of this, though, is
    that you feel quite literally like you're on top of the
    world, and the views are 360 degrees and superb.
