just wondering whether someone might know if I can extend
my visa once I get to India (because I thought it might be
less of a hassle to organize it in Australia before I go-
and after cruising around Indonesia and Thailand first I'll
probably only have about 1-2 months left on it.) Is it
possible to get another 6 months when I arrive? And how
much is it likely to cost?(I'm Aust. citizen)I want at to
spend at least 5-6 months there- would it be better to get
a visa in Bangkok or Singapore instead(although I don't
want to be stuck for too long waiting..)Any advice would
be greatly appreciated!!

The lengths that you will have to go to extend your visa
once you get to India, will exceed by far the benifits of
getting it in Oz before you go. An Indian visa really
doesn't take that long to process so shouldn't really put
you out too much if you get it in Thailand or Indo.
Otherwise you will be forced to go to Pakistan, Sri Lanka,
or Bangladesh, and there is no guarantee of renewel in
either of those places.
You will not be able to extend your visa in India, have
tried! The only way is like "a" says, to go to a
neighbouring country and have it done.
Better still - do it in Bangkok. I guess you will buy your
ticket in Bangkok (Koah San road area). Hand the travel
agent your passport and you'll have it back after 4-5 days.
Saves you spending more than half the day in the traffic on
the way to the embassy, and then half the day to pick it up!
While you wait for your visa you can relax at Koh Chiang or
some of the other islands only a short day travel in
minibus from Bangkok.
There are plenty of stories about dodgy travel-agents, but
ask around a bit and you'll be alrigth.
Have never had any problems with any of them, but can
recommend the travel agent at Mery V guest house, behind
the temple at top of Koah San rd
India also has a consulat in Chiang Mai (at least they used
to do - but doubble-sheck this). If you go there to do a
trek let them have your pasport in the meantime.
