Flights to Lukla?

We are trekking in the Khumbu region in October and I
wonder about the flight situation into Lukla these days. I
hear it is much improved from a few years ago, but I still
wonder how hard it is to get a flight in the peak season.
Do I have to book the flight in advance? and how do I go
about doing that? We are not going with a group. Any
other advice on a Khumbu trek is most appreciated as well.
Cheers!
Jen.

not sure about flights into lukla, but if you get some clear
nights make sure you go outside for a good gawp at the
mountains - the moonlight makes them shine, and the stars
    are so bright...
but yeah, you'll probably be better off booking in advance
cos i don't recall there being many flights each day. it'll
be more expensive but at least you won't have to worry about
not being able to get up to the mountains.

First, Do you plan to fly into Lukla and walk out to Jiri,
or also fly out from Lukla? I flew into Lukla, trekked to
Everest Basecamp and Gokyo, then walked out to Jiri last
October. Booking a flight to Lukla ($83 US) wasn't
difficult--the guesthouse arranged it. A return flight is a
bit of a problem because you have to confirm it a day
before the flight in Lukla. Sometimes there's a long
waiting list. By flying to Lukla and walking out you won't
have that problem. Visit my webpage The Travel Companion at
www.geocities.com/thetropics/lagoon/5491 and go to my Nepal
page where you will find an article with tips and info on
my trek in Khumbu. There are photos and Q&A re the treks as
    well. Good luck. Ed
