    Hi Pete:
According to the traditional Hindu religious almanac that I
have, the festival starts on September 29 (12th day of the
Hindu month of Purattasi in Tamil calendar). The car
festival is on Oct. 9. Hope this info helps.

Pardon the error that I made in my last posting. The
festival starts on the 12th of the Tamil month Avani,
corresponding to August 29. The Ratha Yatra is on the
22nd day of the same Tamil month, corresponding to Sep. 8.

  3. some more information Added by: J

Well, pete, I'm a little lost at this point.
Hariharan has given firm dates from the
almanac, and he is probably right, but I'm not
quite sure what festival he is giving you dates
for. (Hariharan, can you give more
    information?)
In my understanding, the "big festival" at the
    Subrahmanya Temple in Tiruchendur (or
Thiruchendur or Tiruchchendur), being one of
the six famous abodes of Murugan, is
Skandasashti (or Skanda sashti), the six-day
festival which is slated to be held between
November 9 and 14, according to this year's
Tamil calendar. (November 7 is Deepavali.)
There is an entertaining homepage describing
the activities on the final day of this
Tiruchendur festival, which, the article says,
was attended by half a million people in 1997:
    http://xlweb.com/heritage/skanda/knockout.htm
You can also search for "Skanda sashti" to
corroborate the Nov. 9-14 dates. I have seen
them before in an on-line calendar.
You can read more about the festival in:

    religions/skanda.htm
