  4. India - where else? Added by: Kali
[Timestamp: Sat 6 Feb, 10:07 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Been to India lots of times, been ripped off and molested
innumeralbe times. So it must be a great country to still
be my favourite after nearly giving me a nervous
    breakdown!!!

  5. Best and worst Added by: Gary
[Timestamp: Sat 6 Feb, 11:31 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I used to think that India was and is the best and worst
country in the world. Now I know worse places. So . . .
Thailand and Nepal are close seconds due to their variety
and comfort levels. Laos is a best small poor country. The
US is the best rich country.

  8. Sri Lanka Added by: Ann
[Timestamp: Sat 6 Feb, 15:45 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I think it has to be SL -- though Thailand's always very
easy going, and Turkey is somewhere I've returned several
times & never fail to be impressed with the hospitality of
the people, especially in the centre & the Black Sea Coast.
I'd add a vote to Gary's comment on Laos -- and if it's
good food you're after give me Italy or France anytime!

[Timestamp: Sat 6 Feb, 21:05 Tasmanian Standard Time]

It has to be Oman - Muscat is just so beautiful, and Oman
is one of the few truly 'untouched by sad tourism'
    countries left in the world.

for culture, amazing sights and wonderful friendly people:
India, with Turkey and Indonesia in a photo finish for

with a laid back group of people, it's Australia,

[Timestamp: Wed 10 Feb, 16:02 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Because it is the chaos from which Life is churned out in
all its glorious variety. India, because it knows how to
celebrate both enlightenment and darkness. India, because it
has all the beginnings without end. India, because there you
will find you belong, somehow, somewhere, whoever you are
and wherever you came from. India, because it is heaven and
hell together, in one earthy mixture.

  30. Procrastination Added by: Raul
[Timestamp: Fri 12 Feb, 4:04 Tasmanian Standard Time]

How come you're all so decisive? I've always thought the
beauty of travel is it's freedom and the excuse that
provides for not having to form fixed opinions about
anything. And yet here you are so set in your ways, so sure
of your convictions, to the point where you can actually
name a particular country. Haven't you all fallen foul of
the reasons you sought to escape in the first place?
And exactly how do you pick from the endless list of
possibilities? The place other places remind you of
most? By that score I've seen Scotland in Tibet, in India,
in Malawi, in Chile and in Alaska. Not that I'm looking to
be reminded, and in any case Scotland's not far enough away
for me. Although by that criteria, exotica is entirely
dependent on where you live at a particular point in time.
So to be fair to everywhere, surely the best country in the
world is the one you're going to visit next. At least you
can always hope it will be. In my case I've yet to decide
where that is, but that doesn't stop me imagining that it
is. And even if that be so, I'll still unintentionally end
up comparing it to somewhere else, until I move on to the
next country, whereupon the previous one will become the
    compared. And so it goes...

  34. Best/worst food in India Added by: chef
[Timestamp: Tue 16 Feb, 22:32 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Whats the best and worst meals you ever had in India?
My best veg meal, was palak paneer at the Maharaja Restaurant in Madras, best non-veg was possibly some kabab rolls at the new market in Calcutta. Worst veg was the so-called Rajasthani pizzas in Udaipur ( and pizzas all over Rajasthan), and worst non-veg is chicken everywhere. Worst of all though , must be the dhaba breakfast up in Himachal which gave me dysenteria.

  35. Fijii Added by: kaio (kaio@ski.mail.telia.com)
[Timestamp: Sat 20 Feb, 5:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

The native Fijiians with their laughter and bright look
at life make Fijii one of my favourite places. Maybe it is
because the Indians in Fijii are the most surly Indians in
the world and underline the contrast. Not at all like the
friendly Indians we just met in the South of India.

  36. Heeo Added by: Henke (henke-s@usa.net)
[Timestamp: Sun 21 Feb, 20:20 Tasmanian Standard Time]

India?? Yeah, everything is dirt cheap, but money doesn't
rule my life (I like to kid myself), so the obvious choice
is: BRAZIL! The people are just outrageous (Worries? Nothing
a dose of sex, drugs and carnaval won't fix!), Rio is the
most beautiful city in the world, the beaches, the music (in
    Bahia anyway)....

I've been all over south and southeast asia. Love the food
and always have a nice time in southeast asia but Vietnam

It takes a little more depth to appreciate and enjoy India.

  54. Rule of Thumb Added by: NepalKat
[Timestamp: Fri 21 May, 2:08 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Well, it's between Nepal and Burma. Guess I'd choose Nepal
if it came to a flat-out either/or none. But here's my rule
of thumb for westerners traveling in the East:
    Best countries are Buddhist.
    Second best are Hindu.
Third best are Moslem. (Unless you're really fond of the
    12th century.)
Just my prejudice of course; based on more than a fair
share of knocking about east of Suez.
