I just got back from Ecuador a few days ago, my first trip
to S.A. I have travelled several times to S.E.A. I am
considering India as my next destination. I need some
convincing, as does my wife. Please try and convince me that
this is the place I should go next.......

People who need convincing to go to India, often don't have
    the best time there.

    q said true.
either you have the mind set to come or you do not.
there's no convincing needed for india type of travellers.
    it's a chaotic, awesome, problematic, rewarding, fun-filled,
    exhilirating.
so you have to make up your mind.

I suggest you read and read, guide books, history,
    subject-related non-fiction, fiction, everything and
anything. And let INDIA convince you. Of course, talk to
travelers.Go to the many personal travel sites, like Ian
Lockley's site, among many many others.
Come back here with specific questions.
You MAY have sparked a lively exchange, though, so keep
    coming back!

Q's right, you shouldn't really need convincing. India is a
truly amazing country, not only the sights, but the people,
the food, and the atmosphere. Suggest you read books like
Midnight's Children, (Salman Rushdie), A suitable boy
(Vikram Seth), and maybe check out some guide books etc.
Believe me, after that, you won't need convincing.

I think you guys missed the spirit of my posting. I was
looking for nice experiences people had, interesting
anecdotes, good stories or whatever to give me a feel for
    India.

they can be long on india...don't expect them to be included
    on this thread.
for starters, what about being able to see a desert, life on
the banks of sacred rivers, awesome mountains, exquisite
temples and ancient cities, hear 16 official languages and
900 local dialects, travel on the second largest railway
network in the world, food hot enough to make mexican food
    seem bland, etc etc.....
    I'll continue later...digest this first.

I've been to India loads of times, its a brilliant,
contrasting, chaotic, hilarious, disturbing, engaging... etc
etc, everyone who knows can go on forever ! I personally
like the rural areas, villages and towns and prefer to avoid
the cities (they are an experience on their own). The
people are very friendly and very helpful. Enjoy the
experience, it wil definitly be one to remember. What I
would like to know is what Ecuador is like, its on my list
for the future. Whats the altitude like, it is cheap etc ?

Ecuador is a beautiful country. Very cheap, nice people,
easy to get around. The Galapagos Islands are amazing as are
the Andes. I would certainly recommend it.

I didn't mean to be glib before, but your last post there is
sort of my point - I would never recommend that anyone go to
India. It is that type of place; it is that type of
experience. Sometimes you have to look very intently to
find the beauty, while dischord, noise, hassle and
confusion are all around. I guarantee that for every person
who had a great time in India, there is one person who's
trip was a nightmare. Partly it is luck, and partly it is
the traveller's expectations and their own style. WIth your
travel background I'm sure you could handle it just fine,
but as to whether or not you would actually enjoy it --
you'll have to go to find that out.
