Backpacking in Sri-Lanka

After a 4 day stop-over in Sri lanka via India I would
really love to go back there and explore the country in
full. I have never backpacked before as I've always been
too fond of my creature comforts but, at 32, I've outgrown
vanity and now fancy the challenge of self-sufficency over
pre-packaged. Has anyone done this trip? Please advise.
Many thanks.

  1. Read the local papers Added by: Ann

I'm backpacking alone through southern India next winter
and had thought to include Sri Lanka. However, after
reading the Sri Lankan local papers on line, have decided
to take a miss. I already knew that you could only travel
safely in part of the island; however, even the safe parts
have suffered from violence lately. We keep hearing that
peace has broken out - but the local papers are more
realistic than the travel industry propogandists.
