I'll be travelling in India with a good, but platonic,
friend. Does anyone have any recommendations for hooking
into whatever gay scene there is in India (the North,
particularly). Are there any gay bars or hangouts in New
Delhi or Calcutta? What sort of cruising body language would
Indian fags use? Not that we're at all looking for a sex
holiday, but it would be interesting to meet other homos and
just see that side of India, too.

There is not much in the way of out gay life in India. One thing you will notice is that the men often walk holding hands. This is not to be misconstrued (at your peril) as a couple. I did run into a couple of drag queens in Mt. Abu. They came right up to our mixed gender group of travellers and had a chat, to the amusement of the locals. Other than that I didn't notice anything, but neither was I looking for it. Good luck.

As someone pointed out on this page, holding hands, hugging etc. is a normal part of Indian culture (as in Russia) and should not be misconstrued for homosexual behaviour.
As such homosexuality is still taboo in India though I have met catholic missionaries who practiced it. But the metropolitan cities are more open in their outlook and it is possible to discover interesting gay contacts. 1) The VOODOO PUB at Colaba (next to Radio Club, opp
Shelleys Hotel) is GAY on Saturdays and mixed rest of the
week. Doors open at 9.00 pm but the best time is post 11.00
pm. The owner Sapur is very friendly and ensures that the
clubs patrons are safe to indulge in all gay related
activities. Look out for some of the cities more prominant
gay personalities like gay icon Ashok Row Kavi, fashion
designer Jones Farrera, movie star Rijaz Wadia, dance
director Ashtad Daabu, Air India cabin crew boys, etc.
The club has a darkroom at the back and the entry price is
150 rupees on Saturday nights. There are over two hundred
gay men on Saturday night and it ges quite hot and sweaty.
2)'The Walls'... this is the best cruising area in Bomgay..
it is the road that runs along the waterfront of the Hotel
Taj Mahal. Best areas are closer to the Hotel Shelleys/
Radio Club side.
3)"The CopaCabana Bar" at Chowpatty Beach is very gay
friendly though entry is difficult. The best way for single
men to enter is before 10.00 pm as the crowd is less and the
doorman is more tolerent. The owner Anoopum often sits at
the door and western tourist are allowed in easily.
4)"Cafe Leopold" at Colaba Causeway is also very popular
with the gay community especially on Sunday afternoons.
There are also places in North Bombay like Maheshwari
Gardens, Clubs like J49 and Razzburry Rhinosaurus etc.
So have a fun time in BOMGAY.
