A little survey -

Hi all - I'm honestly curious about the most gay and
particularly lesbian friendly places people have found as
far as accepting attitudes and laid back attitudes. Small
minds and cyberbabies need not stick around. Thanks for
serious feedback!

  1. Skala Eressos/Lesvos Added by: Liz Aaron
[Timestamp: Mon 12 April, 8:16 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Dear Anika,
Skala Eressos on the island of Lesvos is visited each year
by hundreds of lesbians... partly because it's the birth
place of Sappho, but mostly becuase one you've been and
enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the acceptence of the
locals, it would be hard to find anywhere else with the
same appeal. please see my notes on Lesvos/Skala Eressos
posted on Thorn Tree lesbian & gay page on 6th April. If
you really want to know more... enter your own post and ask
me what you want to know preferably with your e-mail
address and I'll reply a.s.a.p in as much detail as I can.
    Cheers for now
    Liz

    forum.

  5. Burma? Added by: Anika

Thanks for the advice Neil. And, Burma! I can understand
Lesvos, but why do you think the Burmese are so accepting?

  6. It's only a town, but Added by: Monika

Eugene, Oregon in the US has a large, strong, and very
close-nit lesbian community, and the town is basically
pretty accepting (more than the average American town, at
    least).

    Hey Monika,
Tell me more about Eugene... sounds interesting. Thanks

Because the Buddha never spoke out against homosexuality,
and ours is a philosophy not a religion where we are all
responsible for our own actions. So, unlike others, we are
not condemned by religious zealots for being unnatural,
    etc, etc.

I would have to say that Thailand and Holland are the two
most accepting, if not incouraging, places I've been to.
They allow people to act freely in public and don't mind the
occasional bath house! Holland may pull ahead just sliightly
    in this catagory.

  10. How about Bali Added by: j
[Timestamp: Sat 24 April, 4:50 Tasmanian Standard Time]

In Balienese culuture it is quite acceptable for same-sex
couples to hold hands and be afeectionate in public, whereas
it is looked down upon for male/female couples to act in the
same way... an interesting twist on what happens in other
    places.

  11. Bali Added by: runabout (runabout@mailexcite.com)
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 4:56 Tasmanian Standard Time]

While I was in Bali I was repeatedly asked by the Balinese if I had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Since most of the people had an economic grasp of English, I thought they were just using both to get it right. Wrong! It was truly a question to find out if I had a lover. I had a long conversation with a local man. Very different ideas about sex. Having a partner, present or not is not a barrier for an enjoyable sexual encounter. While this is probably not true for 100% of the population, many things including art support the idea that sex is not much different than the other normal bodily needs, food, sleep, toilet etc. I unfortunately only realised the true nature of the question in my last few days.
Another conversation told me that same sex pairings are not ideal because it can make it difficult for women as the men typically seem to inherit the family compound. I have not attempted to verify any of this information thru other sources.
