Yes, we have roads here. It'll be a looong days drive from
Zurich, but you could make it to Oradea or Arad in Romania
    by night I guess.
Check out www.inyourpocket.com for more useful information
    on Bucharest and Romania.

My friend has done it, you have to be very stoic person,
expect that you will have to bribe everyone at the
border /they always find something/, and you can probably
    have some things stolen.
So good luck and good nerves

  4. No problems!! Added by: Andy

I rented a car in Frankfurt and drove round-trip to
Bucharest last summer stopping in Vienna on the way...
While in Romania, I visited Maramures in the north and made
my way south through Transylvania via Cluj, Sighisoara,
Brasov, Sibiu and then passed through the carpathians to
Bucharest... No problems at all. I found Romania to be an
incredibly beautiful, interesting and charming country, in
terms of both landscape and people. The country is so
diverse it almost seemed as if each village was in its own
separate paradigm. I stayed in both regular hotels
(relatively inexpesive at $25 a night except in Bucharest
which is no deal when it comes to hotels but has very well
priced restaurants) or with locals in bed & breakfast type
arrangements (very inexpensive). As far as safety of
valuables is concerned, I felt just as safe in Bucharest as
in Rome or Paris, not to mention New York... Speaking of
New York, the condition of the roads(outside Bucharest) was
not too bad. Despite the visible poverty, romanians tend
to be more warm and generous than anything else. Also, I
had no problems with border guards and didn't need to bribe
anybody. Just be a little more careful than usual and you
should be able to avoid problems (like anywhere else).
Bucharest is not for everyone, but if you can keep an open
mind and see past the dust you may be lucky and discover
its numerous hidden treasures. Try not to let the
naysayers scare you off and have a great trip!!

  5. Yes , it is! Added by: Tudor (bpopppler@aol.com)

For Francis and Pat : don't worry about it , the trip
to Romania and within Romania is perfecly safe !You'll
be basically driving on the freeway/motorway/autobahn/
all the time except for some 300 km from Szeged(Hungary )
to Pitesti ( Romania).I don't know exactly what roads
you'll be taking from Zurich to Vienna but from there
there's motorway to Gyor , than take the Hungarian
    motorway M1 , circle Budapest on M 0 , get on M 5 to Szeged
and from there through Arad to Pitesti and Bucharest! You
can also choose the other route through Oradea ( some 60
km north of Arad ) Cluj , Sighisoara , Brasov . The roads
on both routes have been recently rebuilt and they
conform to the European Union standards . One more thing
: keep in mind what Andy told you ( look behind the
    appearences ) and you'll have a blast in Romania!Enjoy!
For Tripper Clipper and Lucie : who in the world are
you?Did your car got stolen in Romania or what??Did you
personally pay bribes at the border?I suggest you go and
see for yourself first before you talk all this
trash about my country on the Internet!
