What is the cheapest way to get to Budapest from the US.
All airfares I have found are over us$1000. Would it be
cheaper to fly somewhere else and take the train? (info--I
am a student, but will be traveling with my mother, so at
least her train fares would not be second class.) Thanks

a few years ago i found a really cheap fare by flying round
trip to Vienna. vienna is incredible, i took the hydrofoil
from vienna to budapest (wonderful trip and not much more
than the train!). and then the train to prague, and circled
back to vienna.
Vienna is probably the closest place to fly into conveniently. I've taken the train to Budapest from Vienna, and it's about 3 hours one way. I went from SudBanhoff in Vienna to Kaleti Station in Budapest. For some information of Budapest, you can see a couple of photos that I shot at:

I just got home in melbourne australia from visiting my
birth place BUDAPEST after 43 years , we got a good
deal from australia to ROME and from there we took the bus
to budapest , just over a day and half for about 50 usa
dollar try that,,
also recomend the train from VIENNA to Sopron AND FROM
THERE BY BUS TO LAKE BALATON [I DID THAT TRIP ] CHEAP.
