some time ago someone posted their itinerary and got
interesting replies. i hope i get some too. i'm worried
that i'm doing the usual/lonely planet only recommendations
but then i don't see how it can be done any other way
the numbers in brackets are the approximate days.
rome(2)-vienna(4)-salzburg(2)-salkarmmergut(2)
ceske krumlov/budjovice(2)-praha(4)-kutna hora(1)
berlin(6)
gdansk(2)-warsaw(2)-krakow(4)
somewhere in the tatras (4)
budapest(4)-Pecs-(2)-Szegad(2)
brasov(3)-bucharest(3)
Ljubljana(4)
back to italy(4-5 days)
~
How long by train does it take to get from Rome to Vienna?
Is it better if i stop off at Verona or Bolognia (siena?
assisi? perugia?) and break journey?
~
should i go to bratislava? i won't be able to go there
from vienna unless i have a multiple entry visa for
slovakia (i'm indian and so need all the visas).
~
thanks

  1. your trip Added by: rtb
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 2:57 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Your trip sounds great. I noticed a couple of things
however. I think that you can do kutna hora as a day trip
from Prague-so maybe a day is not necessary. Slovokia is a
great country with nice people and cheap prices. If you are
going this summer I think that you can take a hydrofoil from
Vienna to Bratislava which sounds like an excellent journey.
When you are in Berlin--take Terry's top hat tour--its an
excellent walking tour with a former employee of the British
embassy in Berlin. Its long but for the amount of history
and information it is great--the tour is available from the
    Backpacker and Circus Circus.
Similarly, Yuri's walking tour from the Clown and Bard is
excellent way to get the history of Prague. Both tours are
very cheap and an excellent way to see both cities.
    Enjoy your trip

As a resident of Brasov, Transylvania, I'm happy to see you
won't be missing out on what Romania has to offer. For the
best information on what there is to see, do and stay in
    Bucharest, check out www.inyourpocket.com.

  3. Hi green! Added by: aL

I think you're definitely doing too much. I'm just going to
go to one place (Moscow) and sit in the park drinking beer
for the whole summer. . .

  4. Your trip Added by: Linda
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 9:51 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Berlin is one of my favorite cities, but I would take a day
from there & add Dresden (2 hour train ride south). It is a
beautiful city, which was rebuilt after WWII. Also, I agree
with the Kutna Hora & Bratislava posts. Take that time &
add Florence. If you need a place to stay in Budapest, may
I recommend Dr. Walter Fleps, retired English-speaking
attorney. His home overlooks the city & you get a bathroom,
bedroom with terrace view, & huge breakfast (by Mrs. Fleps)
for about $40/night for 2. You take a bus to the metro & 3
stops you are downtown. His address is Bogar utca 20b, 1022
Budapest, Hungary. I can get his phone number if you need
it, so email me. Check the AVE Accommodations site at
avetravel.cz for good quality hotels/penzions in all
price ranges for Prague. We stayed at Penzion Balbin.
Sounds wonderful!!! Have a great time.

  5. travels. Added by: riverman
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 11:05 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Agreed Berlin is fantastic. Kunta Hora is 40 mins by
train from Prague and is a easy halfday trip. Spend 2 days
in Krumlov and forget Budovice (other than you have to go
    via there)its pales by comparison.
4 days in Budapest is enuf. Its very spread out but has a
great metro to get around on. Take an overnite train to
Brasov or Suceava in Romania to see the monastries.

  6. nothing there Added by: pere lachaisse

    Forget warsaw ! It's a hole !

  7. a lot Added by: plant
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 22:24 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    That┤s a lot.
I also agree with the Bratislawa-thing. And also with
Dresden, which is a wonderful city.
Do you really want to go to Salzburg? In the summer it┤s
crowded with tourists, it┤s even more expensive than Vienna
and people there are not really friendly. I would recommend
romantic Graz instead or two days in the mountenous
    landscpae in Tirol.
The train from Rome to Vienna takes about 15 hours, I think
it┤s called Remus. Especially in summer it can be quite
crowded and it┤s sensible to make reservations.
Further: I┤ve just been to Krakau over the weekend and
although it┤s definetly worth seeing, I think 4 days are
too much. About 30 km from Krakau there is a saltmine which
is great called Vilicko, so you could take one day off
    Krakau and go there instead.
    All the best!

  8. thanks Added by: green (ginhavana@hotmail.com)

thank you all for your excellent suggestions. keep them
    coming!
rtb: for your tour recommendations, i definitely hope to
do them. also i think i will make a trip to bratislava from
vienna if i get a multiple entry visa. btw when you say
backpacker do you mean the hostel? i'm afraid my lonely
    planet is a 1996 edition.
Jeroen, halo (again! green is my tt name), i'm glad to see
bucharest has finally come up on the web page, i've been
waiting for it. i also intend to go to one more place in
romania, still trying to juggle that itenarary a bit.
aL: fancy meeting you here in eastern europe! i know i'm
probably overdoing it but i have been waiting a long time,
drinking beer in the park in moscow sounds wonderful!
linda/riverman: dresden eh? sounds good. i've been to
florence so would like to go somewhere different if i have
to, thank you for the suggestion about accommodation, i
was hoping for something a little cheaper tho, and yes i
have tried ave but haven't booked anything yet.
which brings me to another question must i book in advance
    for june and july?
pere lachaise/plant: warsaw and salzburg (and bratislava) -
to do or not to do, i figure since i'm going there i should
see these places. for each unfavourable post i read another
equally favourable.. what you say about salzburg makes me
shudder but i think i'll keep them on for the time being at
least. i was thinking of going to the tirol region.. damn,
    another juggle needed..
plant, 15 hours, whew that's a long time. will try to go to
    vilicko too.
    ~
    taking time off to regroup

  9. right now I am in kielce Added by: pere lachaisse
[Timestamp: Sat 15 May, 21:29 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Warsaw is just un ugly modern city with tall buildings
covered with suit. It was totally obliterated in the war
remember. Krakow is a mini prague without tourists.
Saltzburg is great as long as you don't go there in the
summer. A few years ago I hated bratislava, now I like
it.It's a mish mash aglomeration of things, but not
necessarily a beautiful city. It's hard to get a coffee
there but the kiosks are always pouring wine. Vineyards
growing right down to the station. I am taking a new job
in slovakia once this one raps up

Linda, This is the second time someone has recommended the
accommodation provided by Dr Walter Fleps in Budapest.I
would very much like to have his phone number if you are
able to find it and any other information/hints about
travelling in Hungary. We expect to be there in September.

[Timestamp: Mon 24 May, 22:48 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    thank you anette..
i've been through my notes from last year (from this very TT) and see you have a blazing recommendation for salzburg there too ;)
well at least that's one visa i do have
update: i think i'll go to eger instead of pecs
i won't be going to slovenia, there's no slovenian embassy out here
hungary may not give me a multiple entry visa in which case romania is a bit of a problem, unless i fly into it or go to bulgaria, any ideas??
wot's that anette, try for a visa to denmark? hmm..
    ;)
