Does anyone know when LP will be publishing a new edition of
the Russia guide? The current one was published in Jan
1996, which means the information in it is current to
probably Sept 1995, which means it is way out of date.
Can someone who's been travelling with this book recently
offer any input on how off target it is?

I used the book last year in the Ukraine and it was ok. The
only negative remark that I can make: the let's go Eastern
Europe guide listed some places to stay in Kiev which where
a lot cheaper than the ones in the lp book.
I used the book for all of 1997. The prices, of course, were
not particularly relevant, but I found everything in Moscow
and St. Pete to be located exactly where LP said they would
be. Including- gasp- the special offices for foreigners to
buy train tickets/ get library cards/ find their airline's
offices. It SEEMS that business' phone numbers are more
likely to change than their actual locations.
I found LP's guide extremely useful, much more valuable for
my purposes than any of the 10 or so other guidebooks I came
across. I think, however, that it depends on the length and
purpose of your visit. The LP guide became even more useful
the longer I stayed. It contains invaluable practical info
for day-to-day living stuff, and the maps are great.
I'm pretty sure that the current edition of LP's RMB book
contains a section of updates from 97\98 in the back. At any
rate, I don't think any economically-minded travel-guide
publisher is doing multiple editions of Russia guides in the
90's. Conditions there are too volatile to keep up-to-the
-minute guides on the shelves.
Hi!
I'm Russian, from St.Petersburg. Yes, some prices have been
changed since 1996 and there are many news here, but still
I use this guide and it's really useful even for me and my
Russian friends. Don't worry to plan your trip taking into
account info from LP "Russia, Ukraine and Belorussia".
Unfortunately, you will miss some good opportunities but on
the whole the picture is still right.
Have a nice trip.
Can anyone offer information on the International Youth
Hostel in St. Petersburg, or suggest suitable
budget accommodation for a four night stay in St. Petersburg
in September? Is it still necessary to have accommodation
organised before you get to Russia?

Obviously the above wasn't meant to end up where it did.
Sorry.
