Moscow

I've heard that taxis in Moscow can be dangerous and
are best avoided. I'm planning on flying into the city
from athens (international airport) and then flying out to
Irkutsk. As far as I can tell the only way between these
two airports is by taxi, which is expensive, and dangerous
especially for an American (excuse my generalizations) Can
anyone tell me if my concern is warranted. Is there
another way? Or should I just not worry about it?
Also, I was looking into going by train from Moscow to
Poland (nowhere in particular) Does anyone know if a direct
rail line exists, and if so do I have to deal with Belorus
or the Ukraine and their wonderfully expensive transit
visas?

  1. taxis in Moscow Added by: Amelia Oliver

(I have been living in moscow for five years now.) I
wouldn't say taxis in Moscow are particularly dangerous -
that idea may come from bad experiences with the very
common practice hear of hailing passing cars and
negotiating with the driver to take you to your
destination. If you get in a "real" taxi at Sheremetevo 2
airport, it will be expensive to get to one of the other
airports, but probably not dangerous. (Unless you're
flying out from Sheremetevo 1 - then it's maybe a ten-
minute buss ride and the buses are frequent between the two
airports.) You could take the metro; private bus line buses
from the airport parking lot leave regularly, and it's
about a 20-30 minute ride to the metro. The metro maps are
in English, but it's pretty difficult to transfer trains if
you don't read Russian. If you speak Russian and aren't
weighed down by time restraints and baggage, try using the
metro and buses/trams/elektrichkas to get where you're
going. A taxi from Sheremetevo to the city center is
probably around $40 - to get to another airport will be at
least that much I would guess. good luck and enjoy your
trip to Russia. Oh, also, there is definately a train
route from Moscow to Poland, but I think the transit visa
    rules are still in effect.
