I am extremely keen to travel through Europe for a number of
months and I was wondering if anyone had info on buying a
car and how hard it is to register it and in which country
would I get the best deal.
Also has anyone backpacked extensively through any parts of
Europe, if yes where and how safe was it.
Any storeys on ways to travel would be appreciated.
Thanks

Belgium and Germany are the cheapest car markets in Europe.
Especially in Belgium there are dealers that specialise to
the sort of sales you are looking for. You should ask for
customs' (zoll) licence plates; these force you to export
the car within one two six months (depending on the state),
but in your case it means that you can travel all over
Europe and not pay taxes to any country. Of course, you
should try to sell the car to a country with a more
expensive car market. A descent 1.8 or 2.0 litre european
model should have the best reselling value. German cars
tend to hold their value better than the French or the
Italian.
Non EEC residents can do a very good deal on a brand new
car. Peugot and Renault do these deals. You buy the car,
but only pay what amounts to a hire fee, and sign a
promissory note. When you return the car the promissory
note is cancelled.
You have no worries as car is fully covered for repairs and
breakdowns. You are fully insured in most European
countries - but not all.
In an average year the Renault outlet at Charles De Gaulle
does 20,000 deal in an average year. There are many
outlets in France and a number in other countries.
Check with you travel agent. I did this a couple of years
ago and my daughter is currently doing the same.
