Hi there,
I travel to Greece in June. I plan to rent a car there.
Can somebody advise me what would be the best way to do it.
Should I book a car in advance or will it be cheaper to
negotiate personaly? Or is it better to buy a used car? What are the prices?
We will arrive to Athens airport at Friday midnight. Is there any chance to find a good/cheap accomodation at this time. Or is there any camp site near airport where we could spend the first night? What about youth hosteles in Athens? What is the cheapest way to get from the airport to the city?
Thanks for your help
Sam

  1. Camping in Athens Added by: TGD

The nearest camping site to the airport, and as far as I
know the only decent one on the Athens seaside is at Voula,
approximately 5km south of the airport.
There are numerous youth hostels in Athens, most of them in
the Plaka, or near the railway station.
You can get to the city center from the airport by the
express bus, but it does not run often after midnight.
Taxis cost normally around 2000 drachmas, but since they
operate on increased tariff after midnight, it will be
    about 3500-4000.
Car prices in Greece are the highest in Europe. However,
you may come to an agreement with some dealers who
specialising in selling and buying cars with foreign
licence plates. Car rental prices are also high, but the
small local companies offer much lower prices than the
multinationals, so a direct bargain might be a better
    choice.

    Hi,
A cheap youth Hostel is at: Gilfordou it is called " Zorbas
Hotel ". It is very easy to find from metrostation Victoria
    Square.
Don't rent a car to sightsee Athens. It is better / cheaper
/ faster to use the metro.
BTW; july / august can be very hot. (42Celsius)
I've visited greece in the summer of 1998. Visit

While in Athens, you definitely should NOT rent a car. Taxis are cheap and a lot can be done on foot. Parking is impossible. Rent a car on your way out of town. If you rent from one of the major companies, its cheaper to do it in advance. You can save a bit renting from a local agency, but check out the car well - I've gotten some real clunkers when renting at the last minute.
