GOING SOLO IN ITALY

I was going to travel in Italy with some family but
unfortunatley they can no longer make it, and we were going
to hire a car and basically start from the Amalfi coast down
south and work our way up with stops in Rome, Tuscany,
Milan, Venice and then onto Germany. Well, I have a dilemma
because this itinerary is very expensive to do solo, so I am
asking if anyone out there has done it on their own and how
easy it is to catch trains, find cheapish accomodation etc.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I arrive in
Rome on the 28th of August and plan to travel for 2-3 weeks.
I'd love to hear from anyone who can give me some ideas.
Thanks a lot! Lu xox

It's amazingly easy to do on your own - all you need is a
travel guide and the numbers of some hostels. Trains run
everywhere (and all roads lead to Rome). To get to the
Amalfi coast specifically (I was just there in November)
take the Circumvecinia train from Naples to Sorrento and
you're there. With Sorrento as a base, you're pretty
central to everything in the area (Capri, etc. too) and
there are buses that run to every town along the coast - or
if you're brave, you can rent a scooter and check out
Italian driving habits (do be careful). DEFINITELY stay in
the youth hostel in Sorrento (try to call ahead to reserve a
spot - you're getting there towards high season) - you'll
meet tons of fun people doing exactly what you are, and can
    pick and choose your accompaniment.
That's pretty much it - DO see Pompeii, skip Vesuvius, DO go
to Herculaneum, definitely go to the uninhabited side of
Capri. And DO buy a good travel book for all of italy (LP
and Let's Go are both good options). Above all, have a
great time, and if you have any other questions, feel free
    to email me.
