Hi all... just a few questions for... boyfriend and I are
heading off from New Zealand to Europe in late June. Doing
London (my mother lives there), Paris, Rome, Athens and then
the Greek Islands.
A few things...I know this probably isn't the right thron
tree, but does anyone know if the Pantheon will be open in
July, what with the 2000 buildup restoration and all. I've
studied the Pantheon and it's my dream to get inside!
Next question, and don't worry, I'M NOT GOING TO ASK IS
GREECE SAFE!!!! Hey, every trip is a little
adventure...if I was going to worry I'd be better off
staying at home! But, anyone know of a central, relatively
cheap hotel in Athens that's worth reccommending? Also, the
day we arrive in Athens, we're catching a ferry to
Santorini that night. The plan is to do Ios, Santorini, and
Mykonos. Are we doing the right islands? Yes, I know Ios
is party, party...but is Mykonos too expensive / touristy?
We're on a ferry pass, and plan on 4 /5 days in the
islands...any suggestions? Also, accomodation...what is
there at 3am (ferry arrival time) in Santorini? And most
importantly, anyone know of a hotel callled 'The Palms" on
Ios / Mykonos....can't remember which. How could I get hold
of them?
Thanks all.
Happy travelling.

All I can add is to say that you can be sure that
hostel/hotel/campground owners will meet the ferry with
pictures of their accommodations for you to check out. Be
sure to haggle, they all compete for the people getting off
the ferries. I would be willing to bet that the ferry to
Santorini will be pretty full, so lots of people will be
looking for places to. Have fun!

The Joseph House in Athens is a great hostel. I was there a few years back so I don't remember exactly how to get there or the price but it was cheap and they through a huge feast on the rooftop patio (where you can also sleep for about half price) have a good time

  10. re Fira, Mykonos, Ios et al Added by: Glenn (steinerphoto@earthlink.net)
[Timestamp: Wed 5 May, 7:17 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Dear Kristen,
Sounds like you're going to the right places for fun
    and games!
Santorini, despite the touristy rep, is wonderful and
the cauldera view is one of a kind. Sitting at Franco's,
listening to Wagner, sipping on a retsina, and watching the
sun descend into a volcanic Aegean, while stretched out on
a lounge chair, are rituals almost all visitors to Fira
enjoy. You can get lodging info from Kamari Tours at
Theotokopolis Square in the heart of Fira where the bus
from the harbor lets off, or from those Greeks willing to
let rooms to you. Just say: "Domatia!", with the accent on
the second syllable. Also, check out Oia, Pirgos, Akrotiri
and Perissa Beach. There's a grocery on the way to the
latter that has great feta cheese and Kalamatta olives, and
barrels of retsina! Try the Lava Bungalow complex in
    Perissa, for inexpensive lodging.
Mykonos! Every time I go there I dream about buying
one of the derelict windmills that are perennialy for sale,
fix it up, move in with that damned pelican, Petros, live
there and get on with life.
Ios. Party town from late in the PM to early in the
morning. All the foreigners grab some zzzz's. Greeks up
early white washing and sweeping the streets, cleaning up
and then early AM coffees with old grandfathers enjoying
the fugitive solitude, the smell of fresh spanokopita and
tiropita filtering through the alleyways. We stayed at the
Sunset, not far from downtown, just up off the stone
pathway from the harbor. There's a great little taverna on
a private beach, called "Kostas", heading south along a
goat path, past a church and around a couple of rocky
points. Last time I was at The Palms, in Ios town, a
German sound engineer had just arrived, set up huge
speakers he had shipped from Germany, with his electronic
sound set up and about 1000 cd. We followed the music up
the hill and introduced ourselves. He set up the next day
at Kostas, where we all got naked, drank retsina, listened
to tunes and soaked up rays. Eleftheria! Magic!
We'll be in the Kyklades and Dodecanese in two weeks
for a month. See you there. Best, Glenn

    Hey you lot,
Thanks so much for your tips and hints.
Glenn, you make me long to be there now, as I sit at work
and the weather gets progressively colder.
Have you thought of writing for LP?
    Ta heaps.

  15. greek islands Added by: Annsi

Hello i would really like to recommend naxos as a place to
go, it has great beaches, both crowded and deserted, good
sightseeing, and neither to many or to few tourist. I would
say that santorini is the most expensive of Santorini, Ios
and Mykonos. If you aren't in your teens and your only
interest is to drink, dance, sun and bathe i think there are
many islands that are better than ios to spend part of your
vacation, ex paros or naxos. Here you can both party and do
    other things.

Does anyone know of a nice hotel near or in Volos or Mt
Pelion. I would like it to be in a scenic place and in the
    $50 to $60 a day range. thanks
