  1. Where to go Added by: Sally (booklover57@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:13 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Because several participants in the Book Club have now left TTYC for good, but may want to participate in book discussions, I have set up a Onelist discussion group called Travel_Book_Club.
It will be moderated (by me) : be assured that I won't delete anything for language or opinion, only blatant flaming and spamming.
It is unrestricted, so anyone may join, however, as list moderator / owner I will have the right to ban people if they create havoc!
I am really hoping to give it a go, so please join me there if you feel able.
I will also make an announcement on TTYC so that people who are interested can join in. It is not meant to be exclusive.
There won't be any discussion of TTYC itself.
    To subscribe, go to:

    www.onelist.com/subscribe/Travel_Book_Club

  2. If anyone Added by: messes with her site
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:16 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Then they'll have to answer to me. Sally is about as nice a
lady as they got on here, so leave her alone.

    Sounds cool.
Will we have to give an e-mail address to access ?

  4. @play Added by: Sally
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:34 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Yes, you do. I suggest you set up a hotmail, yahoo or other web based email account specifically for the purpose.

booklover57 is my book discussion addy only.
    Sally

PS Wow, a fan! Really I'm just a Boring Old Fart interested in stuff like travel, gardens, reading, swimming, ideas...stuff like that. Not TTYC material, so that's why I'm off!

  5. Think I subscribed Added by: Andrea (itis@itisnet.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:37 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I am definately interested in talks about books,
unfortunately I doubt that I will be able to actively
participate much as I limit myself to either libraries or
2nd hand bookshops, both options are limited here in
Japan. Anyway, I hope the club goes well and that perhaps
you might consider returning the club to the YC at some
    point in the future.

  6. Andrea Added by: Sally
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:52 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Great to see you there...hopefully the discussion might spin off into realms prompted by the books, so even if you can't get the selected books, it may be interesting.

Is there a British Council library anywhere near you? I found when living in non-English langauage countries that they often had well stocked libraries.

Where abouts in Japan are you?

    Regards,
    Sally

OK, I think I've subscribed too.
    What happens now ?

  8. A quick question Added by: lucy
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 18:03 Tasmanian Standard Time]

How does your discussions work? Do have a particular book
for each week/month etc or is it any book that you feel
like talking about? It sounds interesting Sally.

Don't you think that posting a club hosted by onelist.com is
still very sensitive to 89.45362% of the TTYC community, in
light of Shutup and your membership? :)

  10. British Council Libraries Added by: Andrea (itis@itisnet.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 18:23 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Hi Sally, I'm in Kyoto and yes, there is a branch of the
British Council here, I used to be a library member then
cutbacks happened, no lending allowed. I think most of the
books were shipped off to Tokyo. Perhaps I should get off
my bum and check out exactly what resources do exist here,
probably a lot more than I'm currently aware of. Anyway,
look forward to the book discussions.

  11. To @play and lucy Added by: Sally
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 18:24 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    @play :
it is an email list, not a message board like this. You can take part by posting on the site
    Travel_Book_Club@onelist.com

You can elect to receive each email as it is generated, or a digest form, which usuually comes once a day, is there have been any posts during the day. You can also browse the archives to see what has gone before.

IHMO it's not as good as a message board, but these are dissicult times.

lucy : so far there has been discussion about one book - "The Old patagonian Express". The idea was suggested by Rocky Mountain Man (RMM) and he made the first selection. He then passed the baton to me and I chose 'Desert Places' by Robyn Davidson.

Discussion on that is due to begin next Mon/Tuesday.

I nominated The Scrutineer for next selector. he polled and decided on "Into Thin Air". Discussion on that will probably commence in about a month.

If you subscribe, I am composing a message now which explains all, so fear not if you want to pick up later on.

  12. Sally ... Added by: @play
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 18:31 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    OK, I'm with you now.

I'll probably join in on "Into Thin Air".
    Talk to you soon.

  13. Something else Added by: Sally
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 18:48 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Let me say something else....

If the people remaining on this board wish to continue the bookclub here, then I am not wanting to stop you.

The Onelist bookclub may well take on a life of its own.

However, because the Book Club was set up by someone who is no longer going to visit here at all, and several of the posters in the first discussion have decided likewise, I took the initiative to set up the onelist.

All people here are invited, as was stated in the original post.

Who knows what will happen in the future? The TTYC people still here might want to carry on, they may not. Onelist may wither and die. In the adsence of a crystal ball, noone can tell. But, then many things in life are a risk!

  14. another fine example Added by:

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
If you're not interested in TTYC then why the attempt to
take over the site, and when it has failed miserably,
leaving the site(we know you won't) under the pretense of a
    book club?

  16. Why don't you Added by: Sally
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 19:35 Tasmanian Standard Time]

All come and join the book club and see how much you don't get discussed.

    Invitation is there folks.

Brit - you know my response.

  17. BTW Added by: Brit
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 19:48 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Into Thin Air and my new LP just arrived this morning. I'm
very impressed with Amazon - that was the first time i've
bought books online. Very convenient when you know what you
want but I don't think I could browse online.

O.K., I subscribed. I'll have to try and figure out how it
    works.
