There are no places, cheap or otherwise, close to the
airport. You have to take a bus or combi or taxi to
Cancun.About 30 minutes or so. They take the same route past
all the expensive hotels and then into the city(cost about
50 New Pesos per person, $8 US). When I went the driver of
the small taxi or combi dropped me off right at the hotel I
requested. You might try Posada Lucy which is clean and
comfortable ($25-30 for a single). They take reservations so
you can be confident of having a place for the first night.
Hotel Canto was cheaper but unappetizing. If you intend to
go to Merida or the archeological sites I have info about
    those.

We were in Cancun in May and it seemed perfectly safe. We
walked around as late as 9:00 pm without any problem. Of
course we used common sense and went around in pairs and
only went down well lite streets with other people about.
I agree with the earlier response as to motels. Get
transportation from the airport to Cancun Cuidad and
they'll let you off right in front of the motel. We found
the "Lonely Planet Guide" good for budget motels here. One
that I thought very good as far as cheap, well located,
etc., I can't remember the Spanish name, but it means
Little Elf, I think, in English.
    Have a great trip.

If you are landing in the Yucatan for beautiful beaches,
snorkelling, ruin sites and the people, consider taking the
same cab fare and going south, towards Playa Carmen and
staying in a smaller place. From experience wen

I spent a week in Cancun on the main strip with 2
girlfriends and we wandered around, partied, had a blast
until around 4 am every night. The locals were very
friendly and cater to tourists. I found it extremely safe
as long as you exercise (un)common sense. If I were you,
arriving at 9 pm leaves you just enough time to check in to
whatever hotel you're staying at, change clothes, and head
    out to party.

I am doing a trip around the yucatan and finishing in
Cancun. Any ideas about cheap airfares or bus or train
travel to get across the border at NOgales to cross in
Tucson?? Flights on the net seem to indicate it is real
expensive. I am single female and not with a huge amount
of cash. Any help would be appreciated.

My husband and I have a villa in Cancun and have never
experienced any kind of problems after the sun goes down in
Cancun. It is just the opposite, crime in Cancun is almost
next to nothing. As far as lodging near the airport, I can't
think of any. If you are staying at any of the larger
resorts you can make arrangements ahead of time for a
    shuttle to pick you up.
    Hope you have fun
