Hi - We're off to Belize for 2 weeks in May and thinking of going to Caye Caulker as the first stop - can anyone recommend anywhere to stay? Is there anything we must see or do?
Also want to see some of the forest etc in land so thinking of going to Chan Chich - is it good? Can anyone recommend anywhere else?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
Julie

    Hi Julie:
We stayed at The Tropical Paradise, April 98, for approx.
    $45Blz.($22U.S.) Very neat and clean w/private bath,nice
    fine coral beach. Good restaurant.

Ignacio's Beach Cabins are cheap(don't have latest prices)
and have been popular for a while. If you want to camp Tony
Vega's place is good. The whole island is only about a half
mile long by couple of hundred yards wide so its easy to
check out everything in a couple of hours before deciding.
What to do? snorkel at the reef, lay back and relax.

We too stayed at tropical paradise in june last year and paid only $15 us for a lovely cabin with veranda, hot and cold showers, ceiling fan, clean sheets every day etc. The place also has a decent restaurant. As for activities I definately advise you to go snorkelling with Mr Carlos ayala as a guide
{you can contact him at cindy's cafe as he is cindys husband} he takes you out to hoi chan marine park amongst other things and shows you the most amazing sharks, manta's and all other kinds of amazing fish,I really enjoyed meself. Except from basking in the sun or snorkelling there really isn't all that much to do but go as Belize definately classifies as "Paradise" Happy travels K.

We went to Belize last summer and saw a great deal of the
country. By far the best place we visited was Chan Chich.
It's very expensive- especially compared to the cheap
hotels that can be found in other parts of the country, but
it was well worth it. The area is beautiful, the guides
are knowledgable, the staff was friendly. We only wish
that we had spent more time there than at the other stops
    on our trip.

it all depends on what you want to spend, but for 15 belize
dollars (about7.5US) there is a great hostel there called
tina's. it is a small island, so finding it will not be a
problem. meet loads of people, mostly younger travelers.
bunk bed type thing, 4 bunks to a room, each room shares a
bathroom. is very clean. ignacio's beach huts are also
good, also a little cheaper, but not as many people.

I have heard that some problems exist in Belize during the
last few months and it is quite unsecure to travel over
    there without any risk.
Because I intend to go there in a near future, anyone could
let me know if this area is very safe or not? What is the
best (and safest)place to stay in Belize too?
    Waiting for some comments ....
    Thanks,
    Baud

Lovely hotel on Caye Caulker is the coral beach - it is
cheap, clean and has great character. Also has private
shower and air conditioning (extra) and great view of the
sea (just). I would advise visiting Xunantunich and stay at
the trek stop (cheap and clean 'sheds' with mosquito nets
etc) with showers and great food. Nice friendly village
nearby. For a few dollars the American couple that run the
place will hire out inner tubes from tractor tyres and you
can raft down the river and rapids in these (they will pick
you up afterwards) its a laugh, although a little dangerous
in places!! Its also a good stop if you want to take a
taxi into Guatemala to see Tikal (a couple of hours drive
through Guatemalen villages). Another good alternative if
you wish to see Tikal (highly recommended) is to charter a
light aircraft from caye Caulker or Belize City airport to
Flores (Guatemala). Its a great way to see the
countryside, ruins and the islands from the air - it's
    breathtaking.

  8. Try Placencia Added by: Can't buy time

My wife and I just got back from 10 days in Belize. You might want to look into spending time in Southern Belize, specifically, Placencia. Its a sleepy little town with nearly no tourists. It has great beaches, snorking (Laughing Bird), rain forest trekking (Cockscomb), and wild life (Monkey River). If you really want to get away try Placencia. We stayed at the Westwind Hotel. A very clean, and modern little place, about 100 feet from the crashing waves. For inland treks check out Deb and Dave Toadal Adverntures.
    Have fun in Belize.
