Pavones to Bocas Del Toro

Hi,
My husband and I are taking 3 weeks in July to go to Pavones (he wants to surf) and Bocas Del Toro (I want to drink beer and read books on the beach).
Is it better to rent a 4x4 and drive down the Pacific Coast of CR and then drive across the border and ferry it over to Bocas or should we just fly and bus it? Any idea about the price difference? How long does either take?
Also, do we need to take Malaria pills?
Any suggestions of places to stay in either area?
Any ideas about what to expect from the weather in either place in July?
Any answers would be helpful!
Thanks!

I think you'll really enjoy Bocas. We were just there and
it's very laid back and semi-undiscovered.
We actually drank the water out of the tap and never felt a
misquito, but, of course, you have to make your own
judgment about the malaria pills. I took them, my wife
    didn't.
If you get across the border at Sixola, it's only a US$15
cab ride to Aldmiranta, Panama and then a US$3 boat ride to
Bocas. No need for a car on Bocas.
I'd stay at the Hotel Las Brisas. It's right on the water,
a little run down, but only about US$16 a night for a
    double.
For a night out on the town, I'd recommend the giant
hamburgers and large drinks at the Buena Vista Deli and
Bar. Also right on the water and a great way to enjoy the
    evening.
You can rent bicycles to tour the island and also there are
several dive shops right on the waterfront to take you
    snorkeling/scuba.
    Have a great visit.

Say, hope you're not counting on crossing the border with that rental, 'cause that just isn't gonna happen.e

The rainy season has started earlier and harder in the
Gulfo Dulce Region of SW Costa Rica (La Nina?). Forget the
rental car if you are trying to do both Panama and Costa
Rica. Take the bus or fly in Costa Rica. Not sure how to
get from Pavones to Bocas easily. Good Luck.
