"Big trouble in little Mexico"

Fellow traveler's !!!!
I hope this isn`t an improper question.
I am wondering how the legislation is in Mexico and Guatemala. Particularly regarding weed, pot and similar. It's not important too me, but it would be nice to know if you could get into a lot of trouble if you accidentally come across it, and even more accidentally get caught!
What about driving? Do one need a driver's license, and do they accept any nationality? Is it safe?
Is it easy to get σ place to sleep if you get too Mexico C airport around 1900. Is MexCity safe that late ??

Interesting question┤s, especially the one about
legislation. Hope you get them answered...

Pot is illegal and they will rack your ass if they catch you with it, even accidentally. Mexican jails are not nice.

Name me a progressive, modern country that does not require a drivers license.

If you get a taxi from the kiosk at the airport and go directly to your hotel, you will have no problem.

    HI,
In Guate you find boards along the roads warning against the
possession of drugs (fine: 20,000 Q).
In Mexico identity checks (vere frequent in Chiapas) are
sometimes followed by luggage checks. I once had to open a
small box containing washing soap. Be smart, abstain.
Mex City seems safe to me, although you read a lot stories
of thefts and robberies. My daypack was not stolen in Mex.
City but in the 'charming' town of Oaxaca.
You can easily find accomodation after 7pm, try the area
    around metro Revolucion.
    Have a nice trip,
    Geert

If you are nervous about Mexico City a nice splurge is Hotel
Capitol..about $25(last year). On Republica de Uruguay near
the Zocalo. Gives you a chance to settle down before
exploring. Ditto above about a drug bust. Remember that if
you do have a problem its best to pay off as soon as possible
    before more cops become involved.

Thank you all for the educational info! (Bob!)
Dumbesillah - as to the driver's license, the essential question was not the first. I agree that it's obvious.
And you Kalle - getting any smarter?
    Feel free to specify anybody!!

What is this about the drugs?
Can't you go on holiday without freaked out?
I am very disapointed in this Vega. Coming from Norway and
    asking this questions!
Stay in Norway where it is safe and no drugs are allowed or
    available.
    Weed my lips

OK, I heard enough, I shouldn┤t do it, but tell me one
    thing:
Does anybody know if the coke is alright, or is it five
parts poison to one part cocaine?
And please don┤t BS me about abuse. I have been warned :)

Bob's right. I know some people who got caught with pot in
puerto escondido. they just handed the weed over and paid
the cops off on the spot. the police are corrupt due in
part to how underpaid they are. They all take brides--
they'd rather have you pay them than a fine to the govt.
and they probably will go home and smoke it themselves! For
some honest, truthful advice without preaching like some of
our fellow moral travelers, I admit i smoked the whole time
during my trip last year in several central american
countries. it's offered everywhere and very abundant. A
friend and got off the boat at a caye in belize and
immediatley were welcomed with invitations to go smoke up
with them. Just don't buy it or carry it with you. You
should be ok. have fun and don't worry!
