Fellow travellers. I am looking for a quiet spot in baja for
a short (4 days) vacation away from the mega-resort
landscape created for american vacationers. beautiful beach
would be nice. and relative proximity to a major airport a
definite plus. any suggestions would be most appreciated.
thanks.

check spelling - it is on the eastern side of Baja, just
    south of Lorreto.

  2. Todos Santos Added by: Elliott Moore (moore@arctic.nmt.edu)

As the previous poster suggested, Mulege is a lovely non-
promoted spot, but it is also half a day from a major airport.
Four days isn't much. If the Cabo/La Paz airport is used as
the major airport, I would recommend: Todos Santos on the
Pacific, a small artists' community with a quite definite
personality of its own, a short bus ride south from the airport.
On the Sea of Cortez side, there are several fishing camps
that are expensive (US$100 and up/day) but very good. Todos
Santos would make a good base for day trips into La Paz or
Cabo San Lucas. Actually, La Paz is also a GREAT place to hang out for just a few days - done it often! Elliott Moore

That's the correct spelling. Really nice.

I would reccomend Cabo Pulmo or El Cardonel both on the sea
of cortez.Very beautiful! The web address for Cabo Pulmo is
www.cabopulmo.com I believe. It would be easier to rent a
    car to reach these destinations.

  5. Hotel Cabo San Lucas Added by: beetleboy

The Hotel Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful place to stay in the
Cape region. It's about halfway between Cabo San Lucas and
San Jose del Cabo, where the airport is. The hotel is one
of the oldest in the area, but it is a classy place, unlike
all the crap that has gone up in Cabo San Lucas. It is also
on one of the prettiest beaches in Baja, with the best
snorkeling. The service is fantastic, and the food at the
restaurant is delicious (though somewhat expensive). It is
frequented by European visitors (many of the females
sunbathe topless), which should tell you something about its
style. They usually run package deals in the summer that are
approximately $389 for four days, three nights, airfare from
Los Angeles and a rental car, per person. It's definitely
not the crass sort of environment you are looking to get
away from, and it's very quiet (at least during the summer--
never been there in the winter). What's nice is they have
free shuttles into town, so if you decide you want one night
of raucous nightlife or want to do some shopping, you can.
They have horseback riding on-site, so if you've always
wanted to gallop a horse down a beach in the water, you can
    do it here.
And by the way, Mulege is not a half day's drive from a
major airport. It's about a two-hour drive from the airport
in Loreto (84 miles). It's a beautiful drive, but just
because it's only 84 miles, don't think you'll make it in an
hour. I believe Aero Mexico has a daily flight to Loreto,
maybe Alaska Airlines also flies there as well, but on a
more limited basis. By the way, all these places are very
    hot in the summer.
    Good luck.

Having driven from WA state to the tip of Baha, Cabo Pulmo is
one of my favorite quiet places (at least it was in Feb.). We
camped right on the beach and saw only two other
tents....very private, clear water, white sand. Driving the
Cape from the airport to San Jose Del Cabos is peaceful,
beautiful, and very rugged. You will need to rent a jeep or 4
wheel drive.....many washouts, diversions, etc. Why else is
the drive so peaceful?! But well worth it. And far enough
from the tourist traps, yet close enough to the airport.
(Yikes, I just reread your message. 4 days, eh? Just get to
Pulmo and suna nd play. Have fun.

  7. Loreto Added by: Elliott Moore (moore@arctic.nmt.edu)
[Timestamp: Mon 26 April, 18:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I stand corrected on the status of the Loreto airport.
When I was last there only light aircraft used it. Now
I find that there are essentially daily service flights
from LAX (Los Angeles Int'l) to LTO (Loreto), on at least
American and Aero Calif., the latter at a most reasonable
airfare. Check it out at http://www.itn.net or your
    favorite Web air site.
That makes it possible to visit Mulege within your four
day vacation window, and I withdraw Todos Santos as the
superior site (suggested because your timing was so tight).
