Hello,
Wanted to hear about Honduras from recent travellers. Heard that there is some sketchy activity there. Also do people reccomend flying to Tikal? or are the roads ok?

Fly. The roads are bad and if it rains they can become
impassible. Reports have it that better airfare deals are
available in Antigua than Guat. City. Tickets bought outside
    the country are much more.

I have friends living in La Ceiba right now and they have
not mentioned anything sketchy, but I have read the travel
warnings. Increased robbery makes sense because of the
poverty from Mitch, but all of those warnings are very
dramatized. Honduras is not a dangerous country and either
is Guatemala, but I would say Guate is way more sketchy than
Honduras. Don't worry about it. It would be a rare thing.
    Have fun.

  3. The road to Tikal Added by: Chato

I just came back from a car trip to Peten, including Tikal.
The distance is a little more than 300 miles of which 29
miles have not been paved. Of those 29 remaining miles
there is a stretch of approximately 8 miles of road that is
very bumpy and if you drive no faster than about 20 MPH
nothing will happen to your shock absorbers. The locals do
not know about any holdups for the last several years. In
Poptun, the Finca Ixobel is probably the nicest eco-place
to stay we've seen in Central America. It includes
horseback riding, caving, jungle expeditions, simple good
food and is reasonable. And this is not a commercial blurb
either - it's simply that it is a great place. But Tikal is
possibly the best place to see of all and if you get cold
feet about driving or busing (US$ 15.00 round-trip) then
fly in but at least spend the night there to experience the
    jungle sounds at dawn.
