whitewater rafting shoes

What do people wear on their feet when they go whitewater
rafting (Costa Rica)? I don't own a pair of tevas nor want
to buy a pair because I wouldn't be using them outside of
this trip. Is it bad to go barefoot? Stupid to wear
hiking/athletic shoes?

Barefoot is asking for trouble. The rafts are often made of an abraisive material which can take your skin off very easily when the boat is going throught the rapids. Also, you will need to enter and exit the boat and wadding around in the gravel and rocks. Best to buy a cheap pair of sandals and dump them after the event if you don't want to carry them about.

I think you are not allowed to go barefoot : In case you
fall in the water, you could sustain injuries by hitting
    rocks.

naw, if you don't want river sandals, don't buy 'em. Just
get those ol' canvas sneakers out and don't worry about
getting them wet. Before tevas, old river runners used to
wear sneakers and wool socks (if necessary). You also want
shoes in case you swim and need to walk back to the rest of
    you party down- or upstream.

Canvas sneakers have worked for me when I've been rafting. I
    don't like Tevas either.
