Hello - I know this issue is touched upon often on this
board, but I'm trying to decide how safe I'll be as a solo
female traveler in Antigua (I plan on studying Spanish
there). Have there been any problems in that area recently?
I'm pretty sure that if I use my head I'll be fine, but my
family is concerned.... Thanks for any input on this!

Our experience with Antigua was very good. There are lots
of people out and about on the streets, which is the
greatest safety aid of all, of course.
We walked around down streets with other folks about as
late as 9:00 pm without any problem. To be extra safe,
early to bed and early to rise, as I think the streets are
perfectly safe during daylight hours.
I think you'll find it easy to link up with someone to
knock around with and the two of you will very safe.
Antigua is a very neat city and I think you'll like it alot.
Antigua is a nice small town and easily walkable.
you will probably be living with others in your homestay and
will have folks to walk with.
Just take normal precautions of a woman in this world -
don't carry or wear valuables, stay on well-lit streets,
trust your intuition, etc.
Tell your folks not to worry, or better yet, plan to visit
you here!

During our recent stay in Antigua we walked around up to
11pm with no problem. The only thing that we found a little
disconcerting (probably because we are old turkeys) at
night was: 1) There wasn't a lot of lights on the street, 2)
not all of the streets had signs telling you what corner
you were at 3) Essentially at night every street looks just
like every other one. Never did feel that we were in any
trouble at any time. If you don't have creeping senility
like we do, you should do just fine.
Antigua is propably the most safety city in the hole
Guatemala, as far as I saw it last wintern.
