Hi, weÆre looking for a nice place for relaxing and having
fun in Mexico or Belize. WeÆre arriving in Mexico in the
beginning of july, and will stay till august. WeÆve
travelling independently several times before, but this is
first time in America. This spring we have taken some
spanish-lessons. We will travel in the southern and eastern
part of Mexico and probably Belize and maybe Guatemala. As
we are two students from Sweden, with a limited budget, we
want a cheap place to stay, like backpacker-place. But we
also need :
Bungalow close to the sea(maybe a room in a hostel or so)
Coralreef for snorkeling, acessable without boat
White, clean and wonderful beach
Good place for relaxing
Opportunity of some activity, like jungle-trecking, bird-
watching
Well, this can be hard to get it all, but some of it would
be great!
Just one more thing, isnÆt islands extraordinarly?, I think
so anyway. That means most of all I would like to find this
specific, fantastic place on a ISLAND.
Thanks.
Hasse

Couple of places come to mind. Caye Caulker off the coast of
Belize is great. The jungle treking/birdwatching can be done
on the mainland. Its not the cheapest place but very nice.
Another location is the Bay Islands off Honduras. Prices are
lower now because of the people who were scared off by Mitch.
Actually all reports say the islands are just fine. LP guides
have lots of good detailed info on both.
caye caulker in belize is the best.it's very carribean and
jamaica-like and very unlike the its guatemala and mexico
neighbors. the people are a real melting pot and speak a
weird dialect of english that i couldn't understand at
all! You take a motor boat from belize city to the tiny
island, it's about an hr ride or so. make sure you have a
hat or jacket handy (they store your pack underneath. i
didn't know that we were gonna speed so fast and it would
be a bit chilly for only a tank top, but i couldn't get to
my stuff.), there is a lot of spray and there is no roof or
anything and you will get wet going over wake or if it
rains especially! tons of snorkling/diving trips available.
try big fish little fish. for a cheap place to stay try
Barabara's or hotel 1798 (by the split)is best. 1798 or
something like that is awesome. hot showers (pretty much
salt free) fans, cable tv! and it's cheap. nicest place i
stayed my whole 6 month trip. around 15 US I think a person
double occ, but you should check on that. 1798 is brand new
just about and not in the lp guide. belize probably the
most expensive place in central america. i heard of jungle
tours while i was there around last christmas, but i didn't
get a chance to go. it was really laid back, no cars,
people drive golf carts to get around. there are a few fun
bars, like I&I. there really isn't a big beach however on
the island. head up to the yucatan for white beaches. try
playa del carmen, if you want a party atmosphere for a
night or two.it is quite crazy and fun and less tourist-
infested than cancun. take a ferry or boat to isla de
cozumel where there are reefs too. isla de mujeres is cool
too, smaller and cheaper.
Two good places are recommended above, the Bay Islands and
caye caulker, but if you reeally want some world-class
snorkelling and diving try Glovers reef, accessed from
Sittee River in Belize. Here you'll find simple accom or
camping ($80 week) right on the reef, which is actually part
of a coral atoll and plenty of spectacular marine life
guaranteed. Some of the best wall diving in the world! It's
rightly a World Heritage site.
hope this helps
