I'm planning a big trip through Central and South America,
but don't particularly want the burden of carrying several
travel books with me for the entire time. When I was in
Asia I found several cheap second-hand bookshops that had
endless copies of LP guides among others. Is this the same
in the Americas? Does anyone have any tips on where to
purchase secondhand copies (apart from with other
travellers) once I am there?

Good question. I just got back from 2 weeks in lovely
Guatemala. I met some cool americans in Antigua who run an
outfitters/mountian biking/hiking shop. They sold a lot of
second books for Guat. and other Central American countries.
Give them a try. Their names are Steve and Matt and their
company is Old Town Outiftters. I have their card; their
email is (shartell@hotmail.com). Happy travels.
