Caribbean coast in Nicaragua

Hi. I'm planning to visit Nicaragua in August or September,
and would like to travel to the Caribbean coast--Bluefields,
certainly, but perhaps also to less accessible spots up
and/or down the coast. However, I'm not sure if Hurricane
Mitch affected that part of the country or not. Has anyone
been to the area recently?
Also, the guidebooks seem to indicate that there are some
busses that do late-night runs from city to city. I know
traveling after dark in some countries is dangerous; is it
safer in Nicaragua? Are there any problems with bandits, of
the sort that you sometimes find in Guatemala?
Answers (or any other advice on Nicaragua) would be most
appreciated. Thanks!

no, sorry, haven't been there recently. i was there two
years ago so things could have changed. however, the
government and ministerio del turismo assures that roads
etc are up and running again. there was a night bus leaving
managua late evening for rama. road muddy and bumpy.
halfways to rama, in the middle of nowhere the bus got
stuck in the mud and we all got out and pushed. take the
boat from rama to bluefields. out there i can't see why
transportations shouldn't work. it's all boat traffic
anyway. don't miss laguna de perlas and stay at ingrid's
hospedaje. if you happen to be there on a sunday; go to
mass with the locals. that was the most exciting experiance
i had in ca. also take the small plane (la costena) out to
corn island. (they also fly from managua to bluefields/corn
    island.)
as for riding the bus at night i tried to avoid it. i don't
think nica is more dangerous than other ca countries
though. the one bus attack i experienced in was in bright
daylight in honduras, so you never know.
    happy trails!

    I just returned from a 3 month's trip through Nicaragua. I
didnt visit the Atlantic, buth I can tell you that Nica is
the less dangerous country in the region. (Itravelled
single and woman) Besides it is cheap, cheap hostels
everywhere, the countryside is beuatifull, people are
friendly and like to talk to you. I didn't had any problems
concerning thiefs or whatever. The colonial cities Leon and
Granada are beautifull, so is the Isla de Ometepe. The
mountains in the north are beautifull, I spent 10 days in
Esteli and Matagalpa. Just go, and enjoy your travel, I be
sure you will like it!!! If you like surfing, I can
recommend you the Pacific. You also can travel to the
Atlantic by boat from Lake Nicaragua to San Juan del Norte
by boat, over the river San Juan, must be beautifull.
    Good travel
