Does anyone have recommendations for places to stay in
Guatemala City (budget-moderate). Also, if anyone has
suggestions on diveshops and certification in the Bay
Islands, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks much!

i have not yet been to ca, but based on my readings,
everyone seems to figure its best to get out of guate city
and stay in antigua, which has a lot more to offer. of
course, if you must stay in guate city, then this advice is
    completely useless.

I've always enjoyed myself in Guat. City---along with Antigua, Pana, etc. It's not as grim as many would lead you to believe. Certain sections are very nice.

  3. Bay Island Diving Added by: ken (onsite@intergate.bc.ca)

Utila has some very sketchy diving ie not that great - alot
of the coral is dead and the dive shops are well less than
the best. The key is the price. My advice is to spend the
coin in Roatan - you can get some good deals on courses and
the diving is much better there than in Utila. Try to make
it to Guanaja if you really want to be blown away and do
the Jado Trader and Jims Silverload- that is if the island
is still there after that storm last season
    later

  4. Stay in Zone 1 - Chalet Suizo is great! Added by: La Gringa
[Timestamp: Sun 11 April, 18:09 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I've been to Guatemala City many, many times, and it is
worthwhile to stay there for a day or two. It is also a
transit point to many other places. I recommend Zone 1
because it is close to the Plaza Nacional, the Cathedral,
and the central market (an amazing place - just from the
    quantity of sights and sounds).
I heartily recommend the Hotel Chalet Suizo. Very clean,
inexpensive ($12 US for a single/shared bath), hot showers,
courtyards, friendly and helpful staff. (No, I am not paid
by them in any way!) My experiences there have been
consistent over six years. You can also store a bag in
their "bodega" without charge if you pay in advance for a
night's stay (e.g. if you want to store clean clothes and
you'll be coming back through, or if you've stocked up on
gifts at the Central Market and you don't want to carry them
while you trek through the highlands).
    Buen viaje!

  6. Go Guate Added by: Liz (lizkris@erols.com)

Here is a second recommendation for 2lunas.
    email: Lorena@pronet.net.gt
    dos_lunas@Hotmail.com
    tel/fax 3345264
near airport, also very nice bus right into the city.
Guate is a fascinating city, real and nittygritty unlike
Antigua which has too many gringos and tourists.
