hi, my girlfriend a I are planning to go to Mexico this
July. But I'm not quite sure wether it's o.k. since it's the
first time backpacking for her. Is Mexico a place to start?
our spanish is not the best so far but I'm working on it.
I want to do a little diving maybe but we're not fixed to
anything. What are some good hints or anything else ??

Mexico is a great place to start. Lots of fellow
travelers..fairly sophisticated tourist industry in case you
panic and need to upscale. Probably one of the highest
percentage of English speakers..at least in hotels and
traveler related industries. The Bajio...the area just north
of Mexico City is close and a good start...San Miguel de
Allende, Guanajuato etc. Don't miss Tula. Mexico City
itself..smog is bad and yes you do need to be on guard but at
least see Anthro museum and Teotihuacan. Puebla only a few
hours away...consider themselves to be the best of Mexico.
Taxco...every view is a post card..300 silver shops.
Oaxaca..my personal favorite..the ruins of Mitla+Monte Alban
are spectacular..the city is beautiful and has some of the
best food in Mexico. Easily good for at least a week..Go
south to San Cristobal de las Casas..mountain Indian town.
For diving go to the Yucatan..avoid Cancun..you'd never know
you were in Mexico. See Tulum..Maybe operate out of
Merida..ties with Oaxaca for food. Chitzen Itza, Uxmal,
Labna, Kabah are ruins close by. Flamingos at Celestun.
Palenque...mid way between San Cristobal and the Yucatan. Go
to the library get some books, buy an LP guide and then feel
free to email me any questions.
Heck yeah, go there! My first backpacking experience was
at age 23 with my BF in Mexico and we had a great time. We
started at Mazatlan, thinking we'd ease ourselves into the
less touristy Mexico. Don't do this. Just go for it.
Skip resort towns altogether. And get a copy of _The
People's Guide to Mexico_, it's FABULOUS. Not really a
guidebook, more a description of what to expect and how to
enjoy yourselves.
Oh, and I really loved Chiapas and Oaxaca, but all of it was
great.
