I'm wondering what this place is, and if any of you have any
information on it?
I really want to do some volunteering this summer - anywhere
- and would like to improve my Spanish at the same time.
Please could you give me some help.
Thanks

    Hi.
I volunteered at Casa Guatemala for 4 months in 1997.
They like volunteers to stay for at least a couple months.
The orphanage is located in Eastern Guatemala in the jungles
, and is reachable only by boat. About 100 kids live there,
and most volunteers help take care of the toddlers. To
improve your Spanish, many people combine a trip there with
a stay at a language school somewhere else in Guatemala. You
don't have to be fluent (they are only kids after all) but
you should know basics if possible. It's really hard work,
you get up at 5 and work all day for 3 weeks at a time. Your
room and board is provided but they are very basic. You have
to be prepared for hard living but a wonderful time.
They started a website at www.guate.net/casaguatemala
For other info from a volunteers perspective feel free to
contact me at casa_g@hotmail.com (not an address officially
linked to the orphanage, it's mine).
